More information about Letchworth Garden City

Letchworth Garden City is a small town located in the East of England, just off the A1 highway. The population of Letchworth, as of the 2021 census, is 35,792 and represents a cosmopolitan mix of people from a range of backgrounds, making the town an exciting and dynamic place to live.

Letchworth Garden City is perhaps most famously associated with its historic connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, three important elements in British sporting, financial and industrial life. Letchworth is often referred to as the Garden City due to its crescent of former industrial sites, its railways and its spacious parks and green spaces, which create a beautiful and peaceful haven in the middle of one of busiest roads in the UK.

The history of Letchworth Garden City is closely intertwined with the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. The town was established in 1903, when the North Hertfordshire Railway Company purchased a large tract of land for its railway company, near the rural locations of Baldock and Weston Affleck. The company planned to use the land for their own development, but it soon became apparent that it was too large for them to retain for their own use. So, an entrepreneur by the name of Ebenezer Howard got involved and formed a Nonconformist trust and purchased the land from the railway company. His aim was to create a 'Garden City' where factories, residences, schools and health services were all close by, and yet where nature and nature's hold on the land was not compromised.

The town experienced significant growth in the decades that followed with a range of new industries moving into the area, including the car industry. In particular, the local firm of Widenbody & Sons became one of the leading manufacturers of sports cars in the United Kingdom and Europe, and their distinctive coach building style was adopted by many of the larger car manufacturers — Rolls Royce, Aston Martin and Mercedes Benz all produced models of vehicles to order for Widenbody.

As the population of the Garden City grew, so did the influence of the finance industry. Letchworth Garden City became home to a number of influential banking and investment firms, including Clear Innovation Capital, Norfolk Security Group and Smith & Saqui Asset Management. All of these companies operate from the same building, the Greenhouse, located in the centre of town, and are currently actively managing over £300 million in capital.

The Garden City also has close links with the motorsport industry. The Letchworth Motor Speedway has been a mecca for motorsport enthusiasts since its opening in 1934, with British racing driver Jackie Stewart competing in the track's inaugural race. Over the years, the speedway has played host to some of the world's most prestigious racing events, including the British Touring Car Championship and the British SuperSport Championship.

The town itself has experienced a steady and significant growth over the years, with its population increasing by almost 9% in the five years between 2016 and 2021. This growth is mostly due to the continuous influx of property investors, as the area boasts some of the most desirable properties in the county, thanks to its close proximity to London and the presence of excellent transport links.

Today, Letchworth Garden City is the perfect blend of modern and historic and plays an important role in the UK's economy and culture. The close ties between the car industry, finance industry and motorsport industries have helped the town to remain successful, and the development of the town's infrastructure, parks and green spaces have made it a popular choice for both businesses and residents alike. With its excellent transport connections, quality of life and values, Letchworth Garden City is a great place to call home.
