Introduction

Knebworth is a small village in Hertfordshire, England, located around 80km north of London. The small village contains a substantial estate, which has been a part of the Lytton family for centuries. Knebworth is perhaps best known for its musical events, with its world-famous Knebworth Music Festival quickly becoming part of British cultural heritage. However, the village has a strong and long-standing relationship with transport, finance and motorsport, which helps to make it a unique place, and of great historical significance to the region.

Historical Connections

The vast Knebworth Estate is full history and nostalgia, both in its architecture and its lifestyle. With origins going back to the middle of the thirteenth century, it rapidly grew to encompass a large amount of land. To this day, the estate is still very much in the hands of the original landowners, the powerful Lytton family. The family have held considerable influence in British politics and culture, particularly throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Stratford House, the main residence of the Knebworth estate, was significantly renovated in the late 1800s, transforming it from a simple manor house into an impressive Victorian-era stately home. The current garden arrangements and park were designed by the famed landscape architect, Humphry Repton, and as such, represent the height of the fashionable style of the mid-1800s.

Whilst the village is largely famed for its modern-day music festival, in the nineteenth century Knebworth orchards and surrounding fields were renowned for their production of apples, pears and cherries for the London market. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, the fruit industry had largely depreciated in the region and as a result, Knebworth underwent a change of focus: to one of transport and finance.

Car Industry and Finance

Knebworth's geographical location has always been one of its greatest advantages: situated close to the then-extensive railway system, it has remained an important transport hub even up to this day. In the 1860's a rail link was formed to the nearby towns of Hitchin, Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City; and later, in the 1940's, a motorway was built, providing easy access from London to the village.

Perhaps one of the most significant connections that Knebworth has with the car industry and finance, however, is its links to John Siddeley and the Armstrong-Siddeley motoring company. British financier, John Siddeley, is famed for having acquired the world's third-largest armaments manufacturer, Armstrong-Whitworth, in 1920. He initially set up offices in Knebworth, and began to acquire a number of other engineering businesses including Vickers and Airco. By 1922, the now enlarged company was renamed Armstrong-Siddeley, and began its move to Coventry, England, where its headquarters were eventually located.

Motorsport

Knebworth is a significant player in the British motorsport scene, and is home to one of the longest established race tracks in the UK, Knebworth Park. The Park, which previously hosted motor races from 1923 up to the end of the Second World War, was originally a WWII airbase and was then converted into a race track.

Since then, the Knebworth Motor Race Track has become one of the most important in British Motorsport. First reopened in 1949, it has since become the host circuit for several British Touring Car Championship events, hotly contested Formula Two races, and even the World Rallycross championship in 2006. As such, it is a hugely important part of the UK's motorsport history and heritage.

Demographics

Knebworth is a relatively small village, located in North Hertfordshire. As of 2011, the population of Knebworth was estimated at 3,090. Statistics show that the average age of the village is 43.9, quite a bit higher than the national average of 39.3. In terms of religion, 71.8% of the population identify as Christian, with the majority being Church of England, followed by other denominations such as Roman Catholic and Baptist.

Conclusion

Knebworth is an historically important village in Hertfordshire, and has a particularly interesting set of associations with the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport, thanks to its prime location and long-standing connection with the Lytton family. Its long-standing tradition of fruit production has given way to Knebworth Park Motor Race Track, with the nearby town of Hitchin also playing a significant role in the British motorsport scene. With a population of just over 3,000, the village is well on its way to becoming a major centre of tourism in Hertfordshire, as many flock to its rich history and culture each year.
