More information about Welwyn Garden City

The City of Welwyn Garden City, an urban area situated about 13 miles from central London, is a quintessential example of the greatness of the United Kingdom's suburban development. The history of the Garden City is surprisingly expansive and complex, with connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport all playing a role in contributing to the character and identity of the area today.

History

In 1919, Ebenezer Howard founded the concept of the Garden City - an area which maintained the best of aspects of urban life combined with rural character - and sought the assistance of philanthropist and property mogul Harold Macmillan to fund the development of what would later become Welwyn Garden City. Macmillan loaned Howard the funds, and by 1925 construction was complete. The first streets of the Garden City were formally opened later that same year by HRH The Prince of Wales.

Post-World War II, Welwyn Garden City and, more specifically, its Howard Centre, were renowned as an area which housed several of the UK's automotive businesses, including a Ford dealership and a Vauxhall dealership.

Motorsport in Welwyn Garden City

Motorsport has a considerable history in Welwyn Garden City, with the area being home to several race circuits during the 1940's, 50's, and 60's. Welwyn Garden City's AllenRacing Circuit laid claim to being the first racetrack in UK to stage an open top car race.

The circuit was completed and opened in 1941 and was initially used as a way to test new cars produced in the area and hone the skills of the drivers and mechanics that worked for the motor industry in Welwyn Garden City. It was later used as a venue for local amateur time-trial competitions, sprints, and hill climes.

The most notable contest held at the AllenRacing Circuit was the British Touring Car Championship, which it hosted from 1957-1963. The circuit was renowned for its terrain and tight turns and proved to be a favourite among racers and motorsport fans alike.

Other Motorsports connections in Welwyn Garden City include the Grand Prix of Welwyn Heritage and the local mini-rails club, Welwyn Garden City Miniature Railway.

Car Industry

Throughout its history, the production of cars and trucks has played a massive role in Welwyn Garden City's identity. During the first few years of the Howard Centre, the Ford Motor Company had a manufacturing plant based in the area, supplying engines, gearboxes and other car parts to the troops during WW2.

In 2002, the production of cars in the area moved to a new site near King's Lynn. 10 years later, the Vauxhall dealerships in the area announced the production of the Astra Sedan and the Astra Tourer, both of which proved to be highly successful models in the UK's car industry.

Finance Industry

The Howard Centre has also proven to be successful in attracting businesses from the finance industry. The area has historically been home to a regional branch of Barclays Bank and an HSBC Bank branch. However, the recent influx of start-up companies, such as Wealthify and Thinking Capital, have seen a dramatic rise in the number of financial businesses based in the Garden City.

Demographic

As of 2019, the population of Welwyn Garden City stands at around 42,000, with an estimated average age of 43. The area is overwhelmingly white British (96%) and has a male to female ratio of approximately 50-50.

Conclusion

The city of Welwyn Garden City has much more to it than simply being a suburb of London, with numerous connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport making it a unique and vibrant area. As both a manufacturing area and a business hub, Welwyn Garden City continues to play a major role in the development of the UK's automotive and finance industries.
