More information about Bushey

The small Hertfordshire town of Bushey has played a part in several important industries over the years, including the car industry, the banking industry and motorsport. Situated just 20 km north west of central London, the town has a population of around 24,000 and occupies an area of some 10 square kilometres.

The earliest traces of habitation in the Bushey area come from the Neolithic period, with further remains ranging from the Roman era to the Middle Ages. By the 18th century, the area had established itself as a prosperous agricultural centre, growing crops such as wheat and oats. At this time, the influential banking family of the Rothchilds purchased lands around Bushey and began leasing plots to wealthy families. In the 19th century, advances in technology and transport meant that a greater diversity of businesses — including the car industry — began to move into the area. By the 1930s, the motor industry had become a major employer in Bushey, with car factories and components manufacturers setting up shop in the town.

The first car manufacturer in Bushey was Herbert Morris, who established his Morris Motors factory in 1930 in the west of the town. The company developed a range of models over the years, including the iconic Morris Minor, which was produced until the early 1970s. Other auto manufacturers soon followed suit, including Austin, which in 1931 opened their facility at Bushey Hall. The facility occupied part of what would later become Bushey Industrial Estate and is today the oldest working car factory in the UK.

Meanwhile, advances in air travel meant that Bushey was becoming increasingly popular as a destination for wealthy vacationers. The Royal Air Force set up a training base in the town during the Second World War, leading to Bushey becoming an important centre for aircraft design and engineering. Later, the automotive industry began to dominate once again, with the establishment of British Leyland in the 1970s. The auto giant was based in Bushey, and the town soon became a hub for the development of engines, transmissions and other components.

As well as being home to the auto industry, Bushey has also become an important centre for finance. Bushey and Oxhey Bank, which traces its roots back to the 1830s, is based in the town and is a major provider of loans, mortgages and other forms of finance to the local community. There is also a thriving start-up scene in Bushey, with a number of innovative financial companies emerging in recent years.

The motor racing industry has also had a presence in Bushey for many years. The Bushey Racing Circuit was built in the 1880s, and is the oldest surviving motor racing circuit in the UK. The circuit has seen some of the greatest names in motorsport taking to the track, including British drivers such as Jackie Stewart and Nigel Mansell. Bushey is also home to several car clubs and societies, who organise regular track days and other events at the circuit.

Today, Bushey is a bustling and diverse town, with residents from all walks of life. Much of the town's economy is based on the automotive industry, with a number of factories and components facilities located in Bushey. The banking and finance sectors are also well represented, with a number of financial companies and banks operating in the town. Bushey is also home to a thriving motorsport scene, with a wealth of clubs providing regular events and track days at the Bushey Racing Circuit. This, combined with the town's vibrant cultural and leisure offerings, makes Bushey an attractive destination for those interested in the auto, finance, and motorsport industries.
