More information about Dunmow

The small Essex town of Dunmow is known for its rolling countryside and seemingly idyllic setting. But while its picturesque streets, delightful pubs and tranquil atmosphere are enough to please any potential visitor, it is not just a charming countryside getaway. Dunmow is in fact home to a vibrant range of industries, most notably in the car, finance and motorsports sectors. This article will explore the history and connection of these industries, as well as the demographic make-up of this small but significant town.

First mentioned in documents of the 11th Century, Dunmow is an historic market town located in mid-Essex, approximately 30 miles from London. It has a population of approximately 14,000, making it the third largest town in the Uttlesford district. The town is predominantly in the CM6 postcode area and is served by the M11, M25 and A120 motorways.

The car industry has been a major market for Dunmow for over 70 years. Stebbings Garage has been based in the town since 1948, selling Volkswagen vehicles since 1961. In 2003 Stebbings acquired the Foray Motor Group, which included franchises for Ford, Toyota and Mazda. This was followed by the addition of Citroen and Skoda franchises in 2005. Stebbings now have several car dealerships located around the town, selling a range of new and used vehicles.

The finance industry is also represented in Dunmow. The Close Brothers Group has had a presence in the town since the 1990s. Close Brothers is a highly respected banking and financial advisory firm, which provides a range of services to businesses and individuals. They specialise in mortgage and loan advice, investment management and fund placement services. Close Brothers also provides metals and commodities trading and investments along with corporate and treasury management.

When it comes to motorsport, Dunmow is also well represented. Several motocross tracks can be found just outside the town, including Rodings Raceway in Gilston and Ellis Speedway in Radwinter. Both are members of the Essex and Suffolk Motor Sports League, which regularly holds races in the area. Dunmow is also home to the Dunmow Motorcycle Club, which was formed in 2001 and currently organises motocross meets and off-road scrambles in the area.

In terms of demographics, Dunmow's population is predominately white British. According to the 2011 census, 90.8% of the population are white British, compared to 8.2% for other ethnic groups. In terms of religious beliefs, a majority (66.9%) identify as Christian, while 16.3% identify as having no religion. The average household size in Dunmow is 2.61 persons. The town has a higher than average rate of home ownership, with 69.2% of residents owning their own homes.

Dunmow is a wonderful place to visit. The picturesque streets and quaint pubs combined with vibrant markets and a thriving car, finance and motorsport industry create a unique atmosphere in this sleepy Essex town.
