More information about Romford

Romford is an ancient market town in the London Borough of Havering, located in Essex, United Kingdom. It is one of the oldest continuous settlements in the area, having emerged as a parish in the 11th century. An important centre for commerce and transport, it became a cog in the industrial empire that was England in the 19th century and successive decades thereafter. The town has become renowned for several reasons — its automotive connections, its bold finance industry, and its newfound status as a hub for motorsport.

The Car Industry

Prior to the mid-1700s, the settlement of Romford was little more than a small rural hamlet. Although the original parish church still stands, the area was mostly rustic agricultural land. This changed, however, with the arrival of London Beer Brewers (LBB) in 1792. LBB had outgrown its current home of Stratford and, attracted by Romford's abundance of quality freshwater and natural resources, opted to move their business to the new town. Since then, the car industry has grown substantially in Romford and its surrounding areas, with a number of automotive companies setting up shop in the vicinity.

Ford Motor Company

The Ford Motor Company, one of the world's most well known vehicles makers, established a sizeable presence in the area during the mid-20th century. In particular, the Ford Dagenham plant quickly became the centre of their production operations, employing thousands of people from Romford and the surrounding area. The iconic Ford Fiesta, launched in 1975, was assembled at the Dagenham plant and many of the first prototypes were tested in the area.

Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is one of the most influential automotive companies in the United Kingdom, and the entire world. This luxury car maker chose to set up shop in Romford in 1986, taking over the former production facility at the Dagenham Ford complex. JLR employs thousands of people from Romford and its environs, producing iconic automobiles such as the Range Rover and the Defender.

The Finance Industry

Romford has a long history of housing key financial institutions. Back in the 18th century, the old town was home to some of London's earliest banks, providing services to the growing population of locals. As time progressed, the area established a number of well-known financial organisations, including the former Halifax Mutual Building Society, now known as the Fidelity Mutual Building Society.

Modern Finance Industry

In the 21st century, Romford retains a significant presence in the financial industry. Several major financial firms, including Lloyds Banking Group and HSBC, have opened offices in the town. In addition, insurance giant Ageas has its headquarters in the old town, while budgeting firm Yolt has a large office in the nearby town of Romford Square.

Romford has a long connection to the world of motorsport. Back in the 18th century, Romford was home to the short-lived Romford Hippodrome, where horse and cart races took place. In the modern day, the town has adopted a new guise, thanks largely to the famous Brands Hatch Circuit. This grand racecourse, located just outside the town, has made Romford synonymous with thrilling motorsport events.

Brands Hatch

The Brands Hatch Motor Racing Circuit, located near Romford, is one of Britain's most iconic motorsport venues. Established during the 1940s, it was one of the first permanent race tracks in the country and quickly became a staple of motorsport culture. Many famous drivers have raced here, including the legendary Nigel Mansell and Jackie Stewart. The circuit regularly hosts some major events, most notably the Formula One British Grand Prix, MotoGP and the Superbike World Championship.

Demographic Details

Romford is home to a population of over 83,000 people. In recent years, there has been a large influx of people moving to the area, primarily due to the strong presence of the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport. The town is predominantly comprised of young to middle-aged adults, the majority of whom are employed either in the trade and industrial sector or in the finance industry. As such, Romford has become a buzz of activity throughout the year, often host to festivals and other events that attract people from all over the UK.

Romford is an ancient market town with a long and proud history. Its automotive and financial connections have been widely credited for the town's flourishing of recent years, while its newfound status as a motorsport hub has only added to its appeal. The town is home to many of the world's most respected car manufacturers and financial institutions, making it an attractive destination for those wishing to make their mark in the world of business. The rich diversity of Romford today speaks volumes for its growth over the centuries, and it is clearly now a destination of choice for those in search of economic success and excitement.
