Introduction

As one of the most popular towns in the United Kingdom and located in the county of Essex, Witham has always been an interesting place in terms of its history, culture and geography. Its ties to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport are something that visitors and local residents alike appreciate and enjoy. This article aims to take a closer look at Witham and its connections to these industries, as well as exploring its demographic details, to provide a better understanding of the town.

Location and Geography

Witham is located in the north eastern corner of Essex and is situated on the River Brain. It is around 18 miles north east of Chelmsford and 37 miles east of London. Devoid of any major hills, the terrain mostly consists of flat land and low-lying marshy heathlands in the west. The parish of Witham covers an area of almost 11,000 acres and is surrounded by the neighbouring parishes - Rivenhall End, Faulkbourne, White Notley and Terling. The town lies close to the A12 road which connects London to Great Yarmouth in the east.

Car Industry

Witham has a rich history when it comes to the car industry, being home to the renowned Luxury car company 'Bentley'. James Bentley was a pioneer of luxury cars in the 1920s and wanted to set up a car factory in Witham as it was a convenient location for materials transportation. The first Bentley factory was built in 1921 and quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality cars. The factory was closed in the early 1930s due to the economic effects of the Great Depression, but still remains as a reminder of Witham's automotive legacy.

Bentley has now returned to Witham in the form of a manufacturing facility specialising in the assembly of its timeless luxury cars, bringing employment and prosperity to the town in the form of 175 jobs. In addition to this, Bentley recently celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021 and its presence in Witham lasted at least 60 years of this time.

Finance Industry

The finance industry has been a major part of Witham's economy for many years and continues to be today. The town houses many banks, investment firms and other financial services such as insurance and pension companies. The largest of these is Lloyds Bank, which is based in the main high street of Witham. It is an important employer for the town and has been a major contributor to the local economy for many years. Furthermore, there are smaller independent financial companies in the town such as Surridge Dawson who are also an important part of the Witham economy.

Motorsport

Witham is affectionately referred to as the 'Home of Motorsport' due to the long-lasting relationship the town has with various car-related activities. The first record of motorsport in the area can be traced back to the late 19th century when racing enthusiasts held regular matches at the Fair Field - now located in the centre of Witham. Today, Witham is home to two professional level racing circuits which are well-known throughout the UK and often host events that draw in visitors from far and wide. The first of these is the famous Brands Hatch Circuit, located just 15 miles outside of Witham. This venue has hosted some of the biggest events in motor racing, including the British Touring Car Championship and the British Superbike Championship. The other professional circuit is Santa Pod Raceway in Bedfordshire, which is just over an hour away from Witham and plays host to the British Drag Racing Championship and similarly prestigious events.

In the 2018 census, Witham had a population of 24,534 with a median age of 40. The median household income was reported at £24,423, with 36% of people in employment working in professional roles. The largest group of residents are of a White British background though Witham does have a large and diverse ethnic demographic. 32% of the population are classed as belonging to the Christian faith and the town is home to two churches situated close to the town centre.
