More information about Ilford

Ilford is a large town in the East London borough of Redbridge, situated in the Greater London area of England, 17 miles from central London. It has a rich history and has close connections to the motor industry, finance industry and motorsport.

The History of Ilford

The name Ilford was first documented in 1086, with the area being occupied since prehistoric times, with the remains of Roman walls and archaeological finds suggesting that it was indeed an important settlement. Evidence of early Anglo-Saxon settlements are also found in the area.

The area developed slowly in the Middle Ages, with most of the population coming to Ilford to work in crop growing, fishing, and associated trades. In the mid-17th century, industries began to develop around the West End and other factories began to open up through to the early 19th century.

In the late 19th century, Ilford saw a huge change in fortunes, with its population quadrupling from 6,000 in 1881 to 27,000 in 1901. This huge growth was driven largely by the development of rail connection, connecting Ilford to the rest of London and beyond, as well as a number of industrial sites. By the 1940's, Ilford's population had reached 92,000.

Since the middle of the last century, Ilford's population and businesses have grown further as London's population continues to grow. Today, Ilford is home to more than 220,000 people.

Ilford and the Motor Industry

The motor industry has been an important part of Ilford's economy for over a century. In the early 20th century, several car manufacturers set up in Ilford, including Lagonda and Trojan, whose vehicles were produced in Ilford until the 1940s and 1950s respectively.

In the post-WW2 era, Ilford rapidly became a hub for the motor industry, with the Standard Motor Company's factory setting up in the area, producing vehicles such as the Standard Metro, the Wolseley Six, and the Triumph Herald. The factory was moved to the nearby town of Romford in the 1970s, but the plant has since been replaced by a new car dealer in Ilford.

Today, Ilford is home to multiple large car dealers, including BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Ford, Nissan, and Toyota, amongst others, as well as a number of independent garages.

Ilford and Finance

Ilford has always had a reputation for being a financial centre, being one of the longest standing districts for banks. In the 19th Century, Ilford was home to the Cranbrook Bank, which later became known as the Midland Bank and moved to Ilford High Road. This later became part of the HSBC, which has a large branch in Ilford to this day.

There are also multiple other banks in Ilford, including Barclays and NatWest, amongst others, as well as a range of independent stockbrokers and financial advisors. In addition, Ilford is home to a number of specialised financial services, as well as legal and accounting firms.

Ilford and Motorsport

Ilford has a strong connection to motorsport, having first been associated with the sport over a century ago when racing events first took place in the town. The first racing event was held at the Ilford Stadium in 1908 and the Stadium continued to host motor racing for almost forty years until its closure in 1947.

The Stadium was replaced by the Motor Car Racing Club Ilford (MCRCI) in the 1970s, which is still active to this day and hosts a range of motorsport events including motocross, sprint and hill climbs, drag racing and autograss. The MCRCI also hosts driving experience days and has a vibrant social scene.

In addition to the MCRCI, Ilford is also home to a number of other motorsport clubs, including the Ilford Slade Motor Club, which has been active since the 1950s, and the Essex Road Racing Association.

Demographics

Ilford has a diverse population, which is largely reflective of London's population. As of the 2021 census, nearly 65% of the population is white British, with over 20% from black, Asian, and other ethnic backgrounds. The remaining 15% of the population come from other countries across the world, primarily from Europe and South Asia.

Ilford has a median age of 33 years, and more than 50% of the population is aged between 25 and 44 years. Over 56% of the population is in full-time employment, with the service sector accounting for 62% of the total employed population. The median income per household is £43,166.

Conclusion

Ilford has a long and varied history, with links to the motor industry, finance, and motorsport which go back over a century. It has become increasingly important as a part of London, and the diversity of its population is reflective of the city's cosmopolitan make up.
