More information about Newcastle Emlyn

Introduction

The little Welsh town of Newcastle Emlyn lies nestled in the Teifi Valley, approximately 13 miles east of Cardigan Bay, on the River Teifi. The town offers a wide range of activities and amenities and attracts visitors of all kinds. Newcastle Emlyn has long been connected to the industrial age and has deep and varied connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsports. This article will explore these connections in detail, as well as providing information about the demographics and services of the town.

Early History

John Jones, of Bodorgan, Anglesey, was granted permission by the local Prince Llywelyn to build a bridge over the River Teifi in 1283, although the bridge was not completed until 1284/5. This bridge enabled the traffic of goods and people from the north and south of Wales to easily pass through Newcastle Emlyn. This brought with it newfound business opportunities and growth.

The town's name is derived from the castle — known in old Welsh as Castell Emlyn — which was built by the Welsh Prince Gwenwynwyn ap Owain of Powys during the 12th century. The castle was moved from its original position and is now a Grade II listed building.

The town has remained an important trading hub throughout the centuries, and was granted a charter by Edward the first in 1291. This charter listed the many activities taking place in the town, including the right to hold a weekly market, as well as a local court. These activities remained in place throughout the 1600s and 1700s, making Newcastle Emlyn an important part of the local economy.

Car Industry

The town's automotive industry has been operating since the 1950s and is still going strong today. The town's car market is largely focused on conventional petrol and diesel cars, but electric vehicles are also available. In recent years, the town has become home to several local car dealerships, as well as a few independent garages.

The town is home to the world-renowned Morgan Motor Company, which is located just outside the town boundaries. It is best known for producing luxury sports cars, and its most popular model, the Aero 8, was developed in 2005. The company has been producing cars since 1909 and is still going strong.

The area is also home to Ineos Automotive, which produces the ineos Grenadier 4x4. This car is designed for off-road use, and was released earlier this year in 2021. This car is seen as a competitor to the top of the range off-road giants and is being produced in the nearby Tankersley area, just outside of Newcastle Emlyn.

Finance

The finance industry has long been an important part of the town's economy and has a wide range of businesses and services. The town is home to a number of banks and financial institutions, as well as a range of non-banking services such as accounting and insurance. This sector continues to grow, with the town being seen as an important hub for financial service providers.

Motorsport

As well as the car industry, Newcastle Emlyn is home to a number of motorsport teams and events. The town is home to the Teifi Valley Motorsport Academy, which is responsible for organising and hosting a range of amateur and professional motorsport events such as rounds of the British Touring Car Championship.

The town has also been home to several international motorsport teams, with the most famous being the Hyundai Motorsport team. This team has made several appearances in the World Rally Championship and is one of the most successful in the history of the sport.

Population and Services

Newcastle Emlyn is home to a population of just over 1,700 people, according to the 2011 Census. The majority of the population is Welsh-speaking, with the majority being from the Teifi Valley area.

The town offers a number of services, including two primary schools and two secondary schools, two doctors surgery, a dental practice and a range of other health services. It also has a number of shops, pubs, restaurants and takeaway outlets, offering a range of entertainment for residents and visitors to the area.

Conclusion

Newcastle Emlyn continues to be an important and growing hub for a range of industries and services. It is closely connected to the car industry and motorsport and has a large and varied finance industry, offering a range of banking and non-banking services. The town also has a growing population and offers a range of services and amenities, making it an attractive destination for visitors and new residents.
