Introduction

Early History

John Jones, of Bodorgan, Anglesey, was granted permission by the local Prince Llywelyn to build a bridge over the River Teifi in 1283, although the bridge was not completed until 1284/5. This bridge enabled the traffic of goods and people from the north and south of Wales to easily pass through Newcastle Emlyn. This brought with it newfound business opportunities and growth.

The town's name is derived from the castle — known in old Welsh as Castell Emlyn — which was built by the Welsh Prince Gwenwynwyn ap Owain of Powys during the 12th century. The castle was moved from its original position and is now a Grade II listed building.

The town has remained an important trading hub throughout the centuries, and was granted a charter by Edward the first in 1291. This charter listed the many activities taking place in the town, including the right to hold a weekly market, as well as a local court. These activities remained in place throughout the 1600s and 1700s, making Newcastle Emlyn an important part of the local economy.
