More information about Llanwrda

Llanwrda, a small town situated at the base of the Cambrian Mountains in the Welsh county of Carmarthenshire, has historic connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport that are still evident today. It was historically an industrial town, boasting a cotton mill and several foundries, which made the area a hub of industry in the early days of the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Nowadays, the town is home to a number of retail outlets, restaurants and pubs and is relatively quiet compared to its bustling past.

Llanwrda is most famous for its association with the car industry, with its foundations steeped deep in the history of the car industry. Its name is derived from the 'Llanwrda Carriage Factory', which was established by Thomas and William Cole in 1837. The Cole brothers stated that their inspiration for the factory was the steam locomotives happening along the railway lines nearby. They decided to establish one of the earliest car factories in the world located on the then-village's outskirts. By the late 1800s, Carriage Factory had grown and diversified, manufacturing and selling cars, trucks, buses, carriages, buggies and prams. The car production was incredibly successful and expanded year on year, eventually encompassing a considerable amount of land, much of which had to be bought from local landowners. Despite the Cole brothers' success, in 1952 their factory was taken over by JBH British Motors, after which it fell into decline and eventually closed in 1968.

It was not just the car industry that was successful in Llanwrda. In the 1950s and 60s, the finance industry and motorsport also thrived. The area was home to several banks, including the Llanwrda Building Society and the Llanwrda Savings Bank. Additionally, during this time, Llanwrda hosted several motorsport events and is even still remembered today as the birthplace of Gareth Roberts, the early British stock car racing champion.

At present, Llanwrda is a small town, with a population of 1,825 (as of the 2011 census). The town is now host to a wide variety of businesses and services, including a supermarket, several shops, two cafes, a post office, public library and several public houses. The town also has a sense of community spirit; an annual parade is held every September, with local dance and theatre groups performing in celebration of the historic car industry and the legacy of the Cole brothers.

In a bid to ensure the area's proud heritage is not forgotten, the Llanwrda Heritage Centre was established in the early 2000s. The centre is a tribute to the Llanwrda car industry, finance industry and motorsport, showcasing a variety of artefacts and memorabilia detailing the industrial history of the town. The centre also runs a number of educated programs to teach school children about the economic, social and environmental impact of the car industry, finance industry and motorsport on the local area, such as the 'Llanwrda Cars and Motorsports' course.

The Llanwrda of today is certainly different to its flourishing past, however it still retains a strong sense of history and pride. The town remains an important centre of car industry, finance industry and motorsport heritage and the legacy of the Cole brothers lives on in the area to this day.
