More information about Blandford Forum

Introduction Blandford Forum, also known as Blandford, is a market town in the county of Dorset in England, near the River Stour. It was initially founded as a Saxon town and as a site for a ford (Stourbridge). The town is located between the bay of Poole and Yeovil and lies in between the Blackmore Vale, Stour Valley and the Marshwood Vale. It has excellent transport links, being at the intersection of two major highways (the A350 and A354) and on the main line railway connecting London to the south-west of England.

The town has a population of around 8,093 people according to the 2011 census, with the majority of residents being of English descent, followed by those of Irish, Scottish and Polish descent. The age-range of people living in Blandford is generally higher than that of the country as a whole, with many retired people choosing to reside there due to its quietness and peaceful atmosphere.

Blandford has various connections to the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport. In this article, these connections will be explored in further detail.

The Car Industry Blandford played a significant role in the UK car manufacturing industry during the 19th and 20th centuries, as the town was home to a number of major car factories.

The Blandford Motor Company was established by Blandford resident, Thomas Mason, at what is now known as Mason Way. This facility was responsible for the production of a range of Robinsons cars during the early 1900s. The Robinsons car was perhaps best-known for its association with George and Sam Robinson, who successfully raced and won the 1926 Monte Carlo Rally in their Robinsons Model 7.

In 1950, Mason Way was taken over by Standard Motor Vehicles, which produced the Triumph Vitesse, the Triumph Herald and the Triumph Renown models. The site was bought by BMC, later known as British Leyland, in 1962 and they produced the Austin, Morris and Triumph models, at the plant until 1971.

Today, the Mason Way site is still in use, but is now occupied by Sunwin International, which produces electric buses, and KBE Engineering, which provide metal fabrication and engineering services to the aerospace and automotive industries.

The Finance Industry Blandford once had a strong connection to the finance industry, with banking operations spread out across the town. Most notably, the National Provincial Bank opened the first banking premises in Blandford in November 1949. The site is located on what is now High Street and is now the premises of the local estate agents, Giles and Roberson.

The banking sector was again bolstered by the opening of what would eventually become the TSB Bank at Salisbury Street in October 1966. This premises was formally opened by none other than local resident George Mott, who was then the Chairman of the National Provincial Bank and later went on to become the Chairman of the Trustee Savings Bank in 1975. The premises is still in operation today, now as a Santander (formerly the Abbey and the Alliance & Leicester) Bank.

Motorsport Motorsport has had an influence in Blandford Forum over the years, thanks to the city's proximity to some of the best circuits and race tracks in the south-west of England. The first motorsport circuit to open near Blandford was the Hullavington Airfield, which was transformed into a circuit in the early 1950s, shortly before the Blandford Motor Company was opened in the town. The airfield circuit was largely funded by a group of local business people, including John Tuff, who was one of the original members of the Blandford Motor Company.

Hullavington stayed open until the late 1960s, when it was forced to close due to a change in land use. It was quickly revived, however, in 1971, as the Castle Combe Circuit, just a short journey away from Blandford Forum.

The circuit has remained in continuous use since its revival and is a popular venue for high-profile motorsport events, including the British Touring Car Championship and the British Rally Championship. It is also the home of the Wiltshire Karting Centre which hosts a wide range of karting events.

Conclusion Blandford Forum has a long-standing history in the UK car manufacturing and finance industries and has become increasingly connected with motorsports due to the recent opening of the Castle Combe Circuit in the nearby village of Hullavington. Over the years, these industries have contributed to the success of the town, providing employment, local investment, and giving Blandford Forum a unique place in British automotive, banking and motorsport history.
