History of Christchurch and Motorsport
Christchurch has a long and varied history, but it is best known for its association with motorsport. In 1952, the Christchurch Motor Racing Club was formed and began running meetings at the local airfield. This quickly developed into a popular pastime amongst locals and the circuit's status was furthered when international events were held there, in particular the British Speed Championship of 1964.
This spurred the birth of the British Motor Racing Club whose well-supported racing events took place at the track from 1970 to 1980. The circuit enjoyed success from both a local and international level and the British Speed Championship of 1969 saw the world's fastest racing cars competing at the venue.
In 1981, the track was sold and changed ownership when the British Speedway Motorcycle Club (BSMCC) took over. They ran a range of long distance and traditional motorcycle races at the venue until the 2000's when the club closed.
