More information about Haverhill

Introduction

Haverhill is a town in the English county of Suffolk, located about 19 miles south east of Cambridge. It has around 22,000 residents and is the second largest settlement in the region, after the county town of Bury St Edmunds. Initially established as a small Saxon village, Haverhill grew rapidly during the industrial revolution of the 19th century, becoming a centre for the production of clothing and textiles. This success led to many more industries arriving in town, including finance, engineering, and car production — these industries have played a major role in shaping the town and its culture ever since.

Car Industry

In the early 20th century, Haverhill was home to several car-making factories, most notably William Morris and company. The company initially manufactured aircraft before entering the car industry, producing luxury vehicles from 1928 until 1934. After the war, Morris Motors relocated to Birmingham and the factory in Haverhill was taken over by the Rootes Group, who set about producing cars for the mass market. This included high-performance vehicles under the brand names Hillman and Sunbeam, as well as the iconic Commer van. The factory ceased production in 1967 and has since been demolished, though it played an integral part in the development of the town and its economy.

Finance Industry

Haverhill also has a long-standing finance industry, with a number of companies based in and around the town. These include a number of major banks, such as HSBC, Santander and Barclays, as well as financial services companies such as Direct Line and TSB. The finance industry plays a major role in the local economy, with a recent study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research stating that it contributed over £200 million to the regional GDP in 2018. The presence of these large finance companies means that Haverhill has become a hub for financial services, with many national organisations having a base in the town.

Motorsport

Haverhill is also the home of two major motorsport events. The first is the annual Haverhill Motor Festival, which has been running since 1999. This brings thousands of visitors to the town, as teams and spectators gather to watch various forms of racing, ranging from classic car shows to full on Grand Prix circuit racing. The second event is the Moth Rally, a popular hillclimb event which has been held in Haverhill since 2003. This attracts some of the best competitors in the UK and sees many of the same cars which race in the annual Haverhill Motor Festival competing.

Demographics

Haverhill is home to around 22,000 people and is one of the fastest growing towns in the East of England. The population is well served by a range of amenities and cultural activities, including a number of museums, galleries and leisure centres. According to the last census, the median age of the population is 46, with 28% of the population falling into the under 16 age bracket. There is also a large percentage of Haverhill's population living in poverty, with around 7% of the population classified as jobless. In terms of ethnicity, the town has a fairly diverse makeup, with 19% of the population coming from non-white backgrounds.

Conclusion

Haverhill is a small but vibrant town in Suffolk. It has a rich history and a wide range of industries that have played a major role in shaping the town, from car production to finance services. The town also has two major motorsport events which attract a large number of spectators each year, while the population is growing steadily, and the majority of residents being young and well-served by amenities. As such, Haverhill can be seen as a model small town in the East of England and one which continues to play an important role in the regional economy.
