Treorchy has a long and varied history, and has seen a number of different industries come and go over the centuries. The first major industries to settle in the area were coal mining and steelmaking, both of which were hugely important in the 19th and 20th centuries. A number of other industries then developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport.

The car industry was first introduced to Treorchy in 1891, when the Carlton Car Company opened a factory in the town. The company went on to manufacture a range of cars, including the 'Flag Car' which was designed by local engineer and car enthusiast, Leonard Smith. The factory was situated on the site of the old Star Foundry and included a number of workshops and buildings. The factory eventually closed in 1966 due to the decline of the British car industry.

Treorchy has long been associated with the finance industry. The first bank in town opened in the late 19th century and many more followed, as well as mortgage companies, insurance firms and other financial institutions. Today, Treorchy is home to several banks, including Barclays, HSBC and Lloyds, as well as a number of independent financial advisors and financial service providers.

Treorchy has an interesting history when it comes to motorsport. The town provided the setting for the very first Welsh National Rally Championship, which was held in 1963, and the event has continued to be an annual event ever since. Treorchy also saw the start of the 24 Hours of Balaclava rally in 1967, which was held on a rock-strewn track near the village.
