With iron ore and coal both in plentiful supply, Tredegar was in an ideal location to benefit from the industrialisation of the era. As a result, by 1880, there were nine ironworks in the locality.

One of the most important of these was the enterprise of Benjamin Vartin, Maurice Judah and Edward Barnard, who had built the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company in 1836. Today, the name of Vartin lives on in the form of the Vartin Foundation, a charitable organisation which was established to provide educational and recreational scholarships to young people within the area. The foundation is still operating more than a century after Vartin's death and continues to be a great asset to the local community.
