Tranent, a small town located in East Lothian, Scotland, is a place full of history, culture, and diversity. In its presence are the remains of generations of the working class, from agricultural and industrial pasts, to those of the modern age working in the car and finance industries, and even motorsport. It is a place that has been branded by its connections to the hardworking trades, with car manufacturing, finance and motorsport all holding monumental significance in its legacy.
Tranent has an estimated population of 12,030, with the majority of its residents coming from a Scottish background (70%). However, there has been an increase of immigrants and non-British nationals in recent years; in 2016 the population was composed of 27.0% British immigrants, 2.5% Polish immigrants, 1.9% Irish immigrants, 1.2% Indian immigrants and 1.1% Pakistani immigrants.
Tranent has a long history of car manufacturing, as it can trace its roots back to the 1930s when it became a major manufacturing centre for the British car industry. It produced landmark designs such as the Austin Seven, Austin Cambridge and Austin Metro. This achievement was recognised when the town was awarded a Silver Medal by the Royal Automobile Club in 1941. Its impact on the town was further entrenched when it became home to one of the UK's most famous car manufacturers, Austin-Morris (later British Leyland) in the 1960s. As well as providing employment for the local community, it also provided the necessary parts and components for the race cars used in the world-renowned Le Mans 24 Hours race, which was held annually at the Circuit Le Mans in France.
Tranent's ties with the automotive industry spread into the financial market, with the arrival of the High Street bank, Barclays Bank, in 1968. It joined together with fellow branches in nearby Edinburgh, Livingston and North Berwick, giving locals the opportunity to utilise banking services within their home town.
The town's successful partnership with the car and finance industries spurred the growth of motorsport in Tranent, with the first official race held in 1970. The circuit was smaller than others across Europe, but still provided a challenging course for competitors, with courses for both cars and motorcycles available. Racers from all over Britain and Europe descended in their numbers to take on the Tranent challenge, and the event soon began to grow, spawning events such as the 'Tranent-Edinburgh Open' and the 'Tranent International Motorcycle Grand Prix'.
Tranent's racing heritage lives on to this day, with its heyday in the 1970s leaving a lasting impact on the people of Tranent. Racing meets are still held at the circuit, and with its wide array of European and British inspired cars, exotic motorsport can still be viewed in the small Scottish burgh.
