More information about Tissington

Tissington is a small, rural village located in the East Midlands of England in Derbyshire County, approximately eight miles from the bustling city of Derby. The village is nestled in a valley surrounded by rolling hills and moorlands, offering stunning views that are characteristic of this part of the country.

Although mostly known for its attractive rural landscape, Tissington is steeped in industrial history and has strong connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Tissington was a site chosen by the Great Northern Railway, Northern Counties Committee, to establish a production facility in a rural area relatively close to large cities.

The village of Tissington has improved both economically and socially as a result of industry, innovation and a commitment to quality product or service provision. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, industry was an integral part of life in Tissington. Sir Edwin Henry Lister set-up a locomotive factory in 1900 and by 1934 the works had increased the population of Tissington to 398, making it larger than nearby villages.

Tissington's connection to the car industry can be traced back to the beginning of the twentieth century. The Hesslewood car plant, which stood on the site of the current Tissington Technology Park, was built by the Great Northern Railway, Northern Counties Committee in 1915. Initially, the plant was responsible for the production of cars, but it became increasingly focused on the production of engines, specifically for airplane use. The company continued to make cars until the late 1940s, when it moved production to the UKs' far North East and eventually closed. The small village was left with the legacy of a series of large warehouses, still in use today.

The connection Tissington has with finance stretches all the way back to the Middle Ages, when the village was granted a Royal Charter by Edward III. With this charter, the village was entitled to hold a weekly market, enabling Tissington to become a centre of financial and commercial exchange. This weekly market transferred to Wirksworth in 1825, however it has been proposed to move it back to Tissington.

In the mid-1850s, the Midland Railway opened a station in Tissington which increased the village's strong ties with the finance industry. Not only did the railway get it better connected with other areas of the East Midlands, but it also brought with it many banks and businesses. The Midland Bank (now part of HSBC Holdings) opened a branch in the village in 1895, providing access to banking and other financial services in the area. The Midland Bank's former building is now used as a childcare facility.

Tissington is also strongly linked to motorsport. The village is home to Tissington Race Circuit, which first opened in 1924 and is now in its sixth decade of use. The circuit hosts a variety of local, national and international racing events, as well as being a popular tourist attraction.

As well as being a centre of industry and history, Tissington is also a charming village set amongst rolling emerald hills. It has a population of just under 400, mostly young families and retired people, with an average age of 58. The village has a fantastic sense of community, with lots of organized activities and events held throughout the year.

The village itself is quite picturesque, with traditional buildings and meandering paths leading through cobbled roads. Those looking to live in Tissington can find plenty of picturesque properties, from large traditional farmhouses to smaller detached properties.

In short, Tissington is a small but perfectly formed village with strong connections to the car industry, finance and motorsport. The village's industrial history and stunning rural views make it an attractive place to live and to visit, making it a fantastic spot to call home.
