More information about Stroud

Introduction

Stroud is a small market town located in Gloucestershire, South West England. It lies at the foot of the Cotswold Hills on the banks of the River Frome, some 6 miles south east of Gloucester. It is a vibrant town with an astonishing array of independent shops, cafes and pubs, galleries and museums, parks and open spaces. It is also the home of Carpetright, Nationwide Building Society and The Royal Bank of Scotland.

Nevertheless, beyond being a thriving day to day hub for visitors, business and residents alike, Stroud has connections to three major industries of the British economy: the car industry, the finance industry and motorsport.

The Car Industry

On January 15th 1882, one of Stroud's most famous sons, Henry Hadfield ("Harry") Woodward, opened a small vehicle repair works at Kingscourt Works in Stroud, having previously worked at the George Salter's Scale Works in Westgate. It was the precursor to the Woodward Motor Car Factory, the second motor car manufacturing business in Great Britain. This later went on to become Leyland Motors and then ended up being part of the huge British Leyland vehicle manufacturing conglomerate.

In 1921, the company changed its name to Woodward Governor Company and went on to become one of the world leading producers of governor and drive-train devices, supplying major military organisations throughout the world.

Finance Industry

The Nationwide Building Society was born in Stroud, with the opening of the Wycliffe Permanent Benefit Building Society in 1845 at what is now the Stroud Town Hall. Later in 1971, the Wycliffe merged with the North Wilts Savings and Loans Society and took both their names Nationwide.

In 1918 the South Western Banking Company opened its doors in Stroud, offering financial services to customers across the UK. It was taken over by the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1987 and continues to serve customers in the town to this day.

Motorsport

Before the advent of the motor car, Stroud was the home to the internationally recognised Gordon Bennett in 1903. The Gordon Bennett Cup was an international race for the world's greatest sports car manufacturer of the era, and was held at the circuit near Stroud.

The race was held from 1901 until 1905, and involved competitors from all over the world, including England, France, Germany, Ireland, the United States and Italy.

The event was held at a track called Hadfield Meadow, just outside Stroud and was the beautiful backdrop to the thrilling spectacle of the race.

Demographics

The 2021 population of Stroud was estimated to be 34,102, which included an estimated 16,708 people aged 18—64 years. There were 16,125 dwellings in Stroud, of which 65.5% were owned and 34.5% were rented.

In terms of employment, the top industry sectors in Stroud are retail & wholesale trade, transport, storage & communications, human health and public administration and education.

Conclusion

Stroud is an exciting and vibrant place to live and work, offering people a unique blend of city sophistication and country charm. Moreover, it is also the birthplace of many of the biggest names in British economy industries such as the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Furthermore, it has a sizeable and diverse indigenous population which makes it a truly destination.
