More information about Stafford

Located in Staffordshire, the town of Stafford is situated some 32 miles northwest of Birmingham and roughly halfway between Manchester and London. It is traditionally known as a gateway to the Welsh Marches and the town has a population of circa 57,700 (as of 2016). In addition to being one of the oldest towns in England, Stafford has long had connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, establishing itself as a major hub in the automotive industry.

History of the Car Industry and Stafford

The original Staffordshire motor industry dates back to 1895, when the first car ever produced in the area was the Daimler Phaeton. This was followed by cars produced by Austin Motor Company, the company having established a factory in nearby Longbridge in 1905. The company's output soon accelerated and by 1915, following the outbreak of World War One, the car production had grown to 20,000 cars per year. By 1929, the factory's production had risen to 600,000 motor cars, helping to cement Longbridge as a leader in the automotive industry.

Today, Longbridge continues to be home to a number of large car production companies. In 2009, following the bankruptcy of Rover, the owners of the site, the Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation (SAIC) struck a manufacturing deal with the British firm, MG Motor. This has seen Longbridge become home to the MG6 and MG3 production lines, as well as the MG X-power SV production facility, with these cars being exported worldwide. SAIC has also produced a number of electric cars in longbridge, including the Roewe E50 production line, which is available to order in the UK, Europe and China.

In addition to car production in Longbridge, the industry has had a major influence on Stafford itself. In the past, Stafford was home to the Austin Motor Company's staff and car workers, which numbered some 10,000 people in the mid-20th century. The industry has since been transformed, however, and today the main car production facilities are at nearby Wolverhampton and Birmingham.

Finance and Stafford

The town of Stafford has a long history of association with the finance industry. In the 19th century, the town had numerous banks and building societies founded by local entrepreneurs, such as the Stafford Branch of the Midland Bank established in 1864, which later became part of the present day HSBC. Today, Stafford is home to a number of important financial institutions and firms providing pensions and investments services, asset management, and other financial products.

In 2009, Stafford was selected to host the fintech centre of excellence, a state-of-the-art incubator and accelerator hub for tech companies in the finance industry. This fintech hub has been successful in helping to grow the local finance sector, with a number of major banks establishing accelerator programmes in Stafford.

The area has also become a popular destination for major finance companies looking to set up in the Midlands. In 2016, Barclays Bank established a new office in the town, which currently houses over 150 staff and is set to double in size over the next few years.

Motorsports and Stafford

The town of Stafford has always had an affinity for motorsports, with the first car race track in the UK having been built there in 1909. The track was destroyed in 1914, however, and it was not until 1978 that another racetrack was built in Stafford. This track, known as Stafford Motor Speedway, plays host to a number of motorsport events each year and is the official home of the British Touring Car Championship.

Since then, Staffordshire has become home to a number of motorsport facilities, including the world renowned Silverstone Circuit. This renowned circuit, which opened its doors in 1948, is now home to a number of top flight motorsport events, including the British Grand Prix, Le Mans Series and Formula 1.

The area is also home to the Oulton Park circuit, which opened in 1954, originally as an oval circuit. Today, the Oulton Park Circuit hosts a number of events, from motorcycle racing series to time trials and karting events.

Conclusion

Stafford has long been associated with the car industry, with the town and the surrounding areas playing host to a number of major car production and engineering companies. The area is also a major hub in the finance industry, with a number of financial institutions established in the town, and is renowned as a major destination for motorsport, hosting numerous events each year. As such, Stafford is a major hub in the automotive industry, finance industry and motorsport, establishing itself as a major player in the Midlands.
