More information about St Neots

St Neots is a vibrant market town situated in the heart of the East Anglia region of the United Kingdom. It is around 20 miles from Cambridge and just an hour away from London. St Neots is well-known for its picturesque meadows, riverside views and attractive market square. But this picturesque market town has more to offer than just beautiful scenery — it has an interesting past linked to the car industry, finance sector and motorsport.

History

St Neots dates back to AD 571, when the Saxons established the settlement and built a church at the location that is now known as St Neots. The name St Neots is derived from the Latin name Saint Neotus, which means the 'son of Neot'. Neot was a renowned Saxon saint and scholar, who founded a church and monastery in the area. St Neots grew rapidly in the 12th century, and prospered in the following centuries. Today, the town continues to be a busy residential and commercial centre, despite the decline of its traditional industries.

Car Industry

In 1903, the first car factory was established in St Neots by the St Neot Motor Manufacturing Company. The factory produced a range of single cylinder and two-cylinder light cars and motorcycles. By the 1950s, the St Neot Motor Manufacturing Company had become one of the largest motorcar manufacturers in the country, producing over 6,000 cars and motorcycles each year.

The St Neot Motor Manufacturing Company went into liquidation in 1965. Production stopped and the factory was sold to a company called Svendsen and Butters, who moved production from St Neots to Bedford. Today, the former factory site is now occupied by a car dealership, a petrol station and a housing estate.

Finance Industry

St Neots also has strong links to the financial industry. The town is home to the St Neot Strategic Investment Fund, a venture capital fund that invests in businesses in the East Anglia area. The fund has invested in many successful businesses including the St Neots Motor Company, which is now one of the largest car dealerships in the area.

The town is also home to the St Neot Investment Bank, which offers financial services and investment advice to businesses in the town and the surrounding area. The bank also provides loans, mortgages and financial services to individuals and small businesses.

Motorsport

St Neots has a rich motorsport history. It is home to the St Neot Motorsport Club, which hosts events such as autocross, hillclimbs and rally sprints. The club has hosted some of the biggest names in motorsport, including champions like Graham Hill, Richard Burns and Damon Hill.

Demographics

St Neots' population is estimated to be around 17,626. The town has a young population, with a median age of 40.9. The town is largely made up of white British residents, accounting for 96.3% of the total population. The remaining 3.7% are made up of people from other ethnic backgrounds.

St Neots is a vibrant and unique market town with a rich history linked to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Whether you're looking for a peaceful weekend away or an exciting day out to watch some motorsport, St Neots has it all.
