A Brief History of Southwell

Southwell boasts one of the oldest churches in England, Southwell Minster, which dates back to the 12th Century and was part of a monastery which was founded in 1108 AD. Later, in the 17th Century, Southwell became known as the home of highwaymen, and a notorious figure known as 'Gentleman John' lived in the area.

In the 18th Century, Southwell found itself in the War of the Roses between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The town's coat of arms, which emblazoned on many of its buildings, bears the three lions of York.

The modern-day Southwell began to take shape in 1888 when the railway came to town. This brought more people and several industries to Southwell, with the construction of a tannery, a cheese factory, a barley-maltings, an iron foundry and a sugar-beet factory.

The most significant industry to have emerged from Southwell in recent times is undoubtedly the car industry. In 1922, Southwell Motors was established in the town. This was a major employer in the area for several decades, and a familiar sight on the roads of Nottinghamshire was Southwell's iconic red vans.

The most renowned of these was the Southwell Super, which was designed by local designer and engineer Wilfred Jagger in 1957. This two-door coupe gained a cult following and featured in the iconic 1960s TV show The Avengers. The car was praised for its performance and manoeuvrability, and succeeded in putting Southwell on the map.
