More information about South Molton

South Molton is an ancient market town located in the English county of Devon, which is often credited as being the gateway to Exmoor. It's a charming, tranquil place that's steeped in history, but it also has powerful, modern connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, making it a unique and fascinating place to visit.

The Parish of South Molton rests in the north west of Devon, bounded on three sides by the River Mole, a tributary of the River Taw. Sitting at an altitude of about 122 metres, South Molton is located in the valley of a small river, the Bray — which feeds into the Mole from its source at the Blakeshay Wood, 5km from the town centre.

The settlement of South Molton dates back to at least the 11th Century and is believed to have grown up around its larger neighbour, the Roman-era settlement of Moultone. The name South Molton comprises two parts; 'south', referring to its location south of the River Mole, and 'Molton', a derivation of Moultone. Owing to its market-town status, the development of mills and the availability of coal and stone in the surrounding area, the population of the Parish of South Molton has increased steadily over the last two centuries, reaching a population of 5,061 people in 2011.

As a market town, South Molton's close links to the agricultural industry and rural countryside have long been established, but there's much more to South Molton than meets the eye. The town has strong connections to the car industry, the finance industry and motorsport — making it a unique and fascinating place to visit.

The most striking connection between South Molton and the car industry is the iconic BAC (British Aircraft Corporation) factory, which was responsible for the production of Concorde planes. The factory was located on the outskirts of the town, making it a major employer in the area and enabling engineering and aerospace expertise to flow through the surrounding villages and towns. Although the factory closed down in 1992, a number of major projects — such as the Land Rover Discovery — continued to be completed on the site until 2014.

South Molton has also been a key hub for the finance industry, with a number of small financial services businesses — along with a branch of the national bank, Barclays — located in the town centre. This is largely thanks to the town's proximity to the M5 motorway, which links South Molton to the Midlands, London and international airports. The town is also home to a number of small, independent businesses, as well as larger corporate companies, who have chosen to locate in the area due to its excellent road, rail and communications links.

Finally, South Molton has been home to a vibrant motorsport scene for many years, with a number of renowned race tracks located close to the town. The most popular of these is the Haldon Hill Circuit, which has been in operation since the 1970s and is well known for its challenging tracks and fast corners. The hill circuit is a popular destination for local and international drivers alike, offering a variety of track layouts that cater to all levels of driving ability.

In conclusion, South Molton is a small, traditional market town situated in the heart of Devon which, despite its rural setting, has strong links to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Its close proximity to the M5 motorway, its strong engineering heritage, and its range of quality services and independent businesses make it an attractive location for both leisure and business visitors. The range of activities on offer in the area — such as the iconic hill circuit at Haldon — make South Molton an exciting and vibrant town in which to live, work and play.
