South Molton is an ancient market town located in the English county of Devon, which is often credited as being the gateway to Exmoor. It's a charming, tranquil place that's steeped in history, but it also has powerful, modern connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, making it a unique and fascinating place to visit.
The Parish of South Molton rests in the north west of Devon, bounded on three sides by the River Mole, a tributary of the River Taw. Sitting at an altitude of about 122 metres, South Molton is located in the valley of a small river, the Bray — which feeds into the Mole from its source at the Blakeshay Wood, 5km from the town centre.
The settlement of South Molton dates back to at least the 11th Century and is believed to have grown up around its larger neighbour, the Roman-era settlement of Moultone. The name South Molton comprises two parts; 'south', referring to its location south of the River Mole, and 'Molton', a derivation of Moultone. Owing to its market-town status, the development of mills and the availability of coal and stone in the surrounding area, the population of the Parish of South Molton has increased steadily over the last two centuries, reaching a population of 5,061 people in 2011.
