Sidmouth: Connections to the Car Industry, Finance Industry and Motorsport

Sidmouth is a town located on the Jurassic Coast of Devon, England. It is home to some stunning golden sands and was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status in 2001. It is popularly known for its stunning views and its fabulous culture, but what is not as widely known is its connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Here we look at the fascinating historical connections between these industries and Sidmouth, and its connections to the modern day world.

Demographics

According to the last census of 2021, Sidmouth has a population of 18,672, with 8,046 people aged 45 to 54 and 7,464 aged over 65. 16.3% of the population are classed as economically inactive, while 32.7% are part of the working population. The town is served by public transport links such as bus routes to Exeter and Taunton, as well as the Devon Coast-to-Coast Cycle Route. Its nearest railway station is Honiton, just over four miles away.

Car Industry

Sidmouth has links going back to the car industry hundreds of years ago. It is the birthplace of contemporary British engineering, having been the site of a large car manufacturing plant for many decades. The plant was owned by Ford Motor Company, who produced the Model T — commonly referred to as the 'Tin Lizzy'. The factory was responsible for the production of the first mass-produced cars in the United Kingdom, which saw the town become a centre of the UK car industry and contribute to the country's booming motor industry.

The factory employed thousands of people in its heyday, and though it has now closed, the plant still stands today, in memory of the period when the town was at the centre of the car industry.

Finance Industry

The financial industry also has ties to Sidmouth. The town was, and still is, home to a major banking centre, with branches of some of the UK's most prominent banks, such as NatWest and Barclays. The branches are still operational, but there is also a large financial services sector in the town, with trading, investment management and accountancy firms based here too.

Briefly, Sidmouth was once the centre of an area with a booming car industry, a growing banking sector and a deep tradition of finance. This has long since moved away from the town, but some of the oldest and most historically significant firms in the UK are based in Sidmouth, in the finance sector.

Motorsport

The last industry we look at is motorsport. For over a century, Sidmouth was synonymous with motorsport, with the likes of William Lygon and Edward Ernest Sutton, both racing drivers, using their locally made cars to race on the winding roads of the Devon countryside. The town continues to host occasional motorsport events. As well as the vintage racing events held at the local airfield, the town also hosts annual hillclimbs, where modified cars attempt to set the fastest times over a ladder of hairpin turns.

The fans who line the edge of the roads know that the tradition of Sidmouth motorsport goes back over a century, and the town has kept alive the spirit of the sport.

Conclusion

Sidmouth has long been an area steeped in industry and motorsport. From the car industry to financial services, it has had its place in each of these industries. However, its links with motorsport in particular remain a lasting memory. From William Lygon and Edward Ernest Sutton to the modern-day hillclimbs and vintage racing events, it is a great tribute to both the town and the sport that a passion has been kept alive so strongly over the decades.
