More information about Shipston-on-Stour

Shipston-on-Stour, a picturesque market town in the north corner of South Warwickshire, has many unexpected connections to the modern car industry, the burgeoning finance sector and motorsport. With an estimated population of 4,660, around half of which inhabit the town itself, Shipston-On-Stour is a rural market settlement, part of the picturesque Cotswold landscape. This idyllic setting maybe unexpected, given the town's historic connections to the automotive industry as well as its contemporary presence in the world of financial services and motorsport.

The history of Shipston-on-Stour in relation to the car industry begins with local entrepreneur Alexander Briggs, who in 1867 was the first person to officially open a commercial car dealership. Following up on a suggestion from the local constabulary, Briggs opened the dealership to meet the needs of the local community for vehicles for the transport of goods, such as livestock, around the area. In the years to follow, this dealership, which was later acquired by a major British motoring company and later called Briggs Car Company, became a thriving local business.

This association with the automotive industry further expanded in 1904 when, as a result of Briggs Car Company's success, a number of private investors, led by Charles R. Poynton, established the Shipston-on-Stour Motor Works (SSMW). Located on the outskirts of the town, this company was responsible for making a variety of cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles, including some of the earliest automobiles, as well as agricultural machinery. The company ran successfully until 1972, when due to a combination of the growth of international competition and the recession in the auto industry, it closed its doors.

In more recent years the town has had some surprising connections to the world of finance. In 2003, a financial services provider called Shipston-on-Stour Asset Management (SPSAM) opened in the town and has since grown to become Shipston-on-Stour's most prominent financial services hub. The company provides specialist advice in asset management, strategic decisions on acquisitions, mergers, and valuations, as well as security services, which has been of great benefit to the local economy.

Shipston-on-Stour is also a surprising hub for motorsport. In 2016, the town hosted its first regional race meeting, which was a great success and marked the beginning of a new tradition. The races are mainly attended by local residents and are widely popular, having continued to take place every year since.

In terms of demographics, the most recent census results from 2021 show that the population of Shipston-on-Stour is predominantly White British, accounting for 90.4% of the population. With regards to age distribution, the town is home to mainly those aged 45-64, accounting for 30.2% of the population. The median age of the town is recorded as 48.4, which is slightly lower than the national median of 52.

In conclusion, Shipston-on-Stour has many unexpected connections to the modern car industry, finance and motorsport. With its picturesque setting, engaging history and a growing economy, it is a town which will be of increasing interest to many industries and sectors. All of these factors make it a fascinating place to explore and discover.
