History

The earliest edition of Shifnal's history indicates that the town was first created in the year 902, when Shifnal was fought for and won by Bleddyn of Powys, a Celtic ruler whose domain stretched across the Welsh Marches at the time.

In 1204, the town was granted a charter, allowing it to trade in nearby markets, which is believed to have helped its reputation as a booming trade centre at the time.

Throughout its centuries-spanning history, Shifnal has also been closely connected to key events such as the Wars of the Roses, in which it was taken by the Yorkists, and later went through a period of restoration and rebuilding, with notable figures such as Robert Clive of the East India Company associating themselves with the town.

However, that legacy can still be found within the town today in the form of Bovis Morris, the Morris Motors' successor, which opened a manufacturing plant in Shifnal in 1977 and is still successfully producing Morris's iconic cars to this day.

The first major racing event in Shifnal was its first motor racing event, which was held on the grounds of the old RAF base in 1958, with dozens of cars competing in events such as hill climb and speed trial.
