More information about Sheerness

Sheerness is a town located in the north of England in the county of Kent. It lies on the Isle of Sheppey which is situated in the estuary of the River Thames and is the largest town in the region.

The town has a long and rich history dating back to the Bronze Age and has played a part in many wars such as the Spanish Armada, Napoleonic wars, and the First and Second World War. Sheerness is a vibrant seafaring town which continues to contribute to the local economy, through the car industry, finance industry and motorsport.

The Car Industry Sheerness has a long connection with the car industry, through the Ford Motor Company. In 1965, a new Ford-built parts depot opened on the Isle of Sheppey, located just a few miles from the town of Sheerness. The depot enabled the production line at nearby Ford Bridgend plant in Wales to be kept moving quickly and efficiently.

In 1987, Ford announced the closure of the Bridgend factory, bringing to an end the production of cars in Wales. As a result, the demand for parts rapidly declined and the parts depot on the Isle of Sheppey closed its doors. The car industry in the Isle of Sheppey continued however, when in 1996 a new Ford-owned testing facility was built on the Island.

The new testing facility has been employed to facilitate many motor-related industries such as performance and engine tuning, suspension and brake testing, and other modifications to stock cars. This has provided a wealth of employment opportunities for locals, from engineers and mechanics to technicians, helping to cement the strong relationship of the town with the car industry.

Finance Industry Sheerness has also enjoyed a long association with the finance industry, owing to its desirable location in the south east of England. In September 2008, Sheerness Town Centre became the first district in the UK to become a trading centre for the London Stock Exchange.

The Sheerness Town Centre initiative was set up in order to provide access to stocks and shares to people in the southern counties, anywhere from Dover to Cornwall, allowing individuals to invest in the markets without travelling to London. The Stock Exchange welcomed the idea, allowing traders direct access to the markets, while also allowing them to be closer to the source of their investments.

In addition to providing direct access to the markets, the Sheerness Town Centre initiative has provided the local population with smarter investment options. The initiative provides educational support and resources for understanding the markets, and it showcases local business opportunities which have often been overlooked.

Motorsport Sheerness is also well known for its involvement in Motorsport. The Isle of Sheppey Raceway, located just outside of the town, has held biggest motor racing events in the UK since it was built in 1974. The Raceway hosts a number of events on a regular basis, from the Isle of Sheppey Supercar Days, to car themed music festivals and historic motor racing championships.

The track is a 1.2 mile (2 km) long circuit which features high-speed bends and straights. The track is renowned for its thrilling racing, with cars reaching speeds of up to 100 mph. Racing typically takes place on weekends and is popular with both fans and drivers alike, many of whom come from the town itself.

Demographics The population of Sheerness was officially recorded at 12,300 in June 2016, with the majority (71.44%) of the population being White British. The second largest ethnic group is British Asian (16.08%), followed by non-British White (3.18%), British African (2.66%) and British Irish (0.69%). Around 73.15% of the population professed to be of Christian faith, with 68.92% being affiliated with the Church of England.

Conclusion Sheerness is a historic town located in the North of England on the Isle of Sheppey. Its long history has seen it play a part in many wars, and it continues to contribute to the local economy, through its connections with the car industry, finance industry and motorsport.

The town has a considerable connection with the car industry through its association with the Ford Motor Company, while its close proximity to London, together with the launch of the Sheerness Town Centre initiative, has provided locals with the opportunity to access and trade in the stock markets direct from their home town. Sheerness's association with Motorsport is also well documented, with the Isle of Sheppey Raceway hosting many of the country's biggest motor events.

Overall, Sheerness has played a part in many of the major industries which have shaped the nation, and it continues to contribute to the growth and development of the area.
