Settle is a small, northern market town and civil parish in the Craven District of North Yorkshire, England. It lies within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is known as the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. Despite its relatively small size, Settle has a long and interesting history, particularly in regards to its connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Settle is located in the North East corner of North Yorkshire, about eight miles from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with Skipton to the North West and Gisburn to the North East. The town is situated near a bend in the River Ribble and is surrounded by limestone hills, making it a popular tourist destination.


Settle has a long and fascinating history which dates back as far as the Iron Age, with evidence of a Romano-British settlement that dates back to the 1st century BC. There is also evidence of a Viking settlement in the area and the Normans built a timber castle in the area in 1090. The town itself was founded in the 13th century and received a charter to hold a weekly market in 1249.

Settle's history is closely tied to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Early in the 19th century, the York and North Midland Railway opened a branch line from Settle to Carlisle.
