More information about Saltcoats

Introduction

The town of Saltcoats lies on the Firth of Clyde in North Ayrshire, Scotland. It has a long and rich history and is home to a population of around 10,000 people. Known for its saltworks, a thriving port and a number of traditional manufacturing industries, Saltcoats has been an important centre of industry and commerce since it was first established in the 12th century. Over the centuries, the town has been connected to the car industry, the finance industry and motorsport, but it is the latter two which have seen the town become something of a hub of industry and finance over recent years.

The Car Industry

The automotive industry has been a key part of the local economy since the late 19th century when the Strathesk Motor Works was opened at the harbour in Saltcoats. Founded by businessman David Nicolson in 1889, the works specialised in the manufacture of steam powered automobiles, as well as providing vehicles for hire. The company expanded over the years, with a number of branches being opened up around Britain. In 1912, the Saltcoats branch of the company was renamed the Ayrshire Motor Works and became a major source of employment for the town.

At the turn of the century, a number of other car-related businesses established themselves in the town, such as Napier Motors and Ayrshire Automobile Ltd. Both businesses provided engineering and mechanical services in Saltcoats and the surrounding area, making them an important part of the town's economy.

The Finance Industry

The finance industry has had a major role to play in Saltcoats's success over the years and it is a sector in which the town has developed a great expertise. During the 19th century, the town was home to a number of highly successful finance businesses and the town's banks were amongst the most successful in Scotland. The town is also the birthplace of a number of leading financial companies, such as Standard Life, which grew to become one of the UK's leading insurance companies during the 20th century.

Motor Sport

One of the more unexpected connections that the town of Saltcoats has is with motorsport. In the late 19th century, the town was home to the Prestwick Car Club, which took advantage of the excellent roads around the area to host drag races and speed trials, as well as organising rallies and competitions. The Prestwick Car Club also played a major role in the revived Town to Town and Dumfries Air Races, a series of motor races which took place in Scotland during the early part of the 20th century, and which included a number of races around the Saltcoats area. The last air race to take place in Saltcoats was in 1921, with the development of better roads elsewhere leading to a decline in the number of races being held in the town.

Demographics

Saltcoats is the second largest town in North Ayrshire, with a population of 10,457 in the 2011 census. The town is relatively young, with an average age of 33.7 years. Saltcoats is ethnically diverse, with 6.3% of the population reporting to be from ethnic minority backgrounds. The town has a thriving economy and a large number of skilled trades and services businesses in operation, such as motor mechanics, engineering, financial services and tourism.

Conclusion

Saltcoats is a historic and thriving town with a deep-rooted connection to industry and finance. The town has been associated with the car industry since the late 19th century and has grown to become a hub of financial services and motorsport. The town's young population, diverse ethnicity, and strong economy make it an attractive destination for a variety of industries, and its connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport have ensured its place as a major driver of economic growth in North Ayrshire.
