By the late 1700s, Rowlands Gill had become a popular tourist destination, with outdoor pursuits such as horse-riding, archery, and boating popular activities, leading to increased expansion of local amenities. Bolckow and Vaughan Ironworks also grew steadily in size throughout the 1800s, its products eventually helping build the world's first metalled road, in nearby Whickham. As the railways boomed in the late 19th century, Rowlands Gill became increasingly important commercially, leading to the construction of a number of brickworks and the expansion of iron works and feed mills.
