Retford in the United Kingdom is a prosperous market town in eastern Nottinghamshire, halfway between Doncaster and Lincoln. Having a rich cultural and industrial heritage, Retford is known locally as the "Gateway to the North".

With a population of around 22,000 and a plethora of beautiful historical buildings, Retford is a popular choice for locals and visitors alike. Rich in history, Retford has been occupied since Roman times and is believed to be the oldest settlement in Nottinghamshire. Also renowned for its unique links to the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport, Retford is the ideal location for all sorts of people.

Car Industry

Retford's relationships with the car industry have stretched back to the 19th century, when Burrows & Molyneux provided locally adapted machinery for car building from Thorne Road in the town. Within the following decades, Retford had become the proud home of several car manufacturing firms, none as significant as the Holden, which was founded in the town in 1898. Holden was the first car manufacturer in Retford, offering a variety of different models, all of which were built to the highest standards. Their factory was based on The Island, a substantial space located between North Road, South Road, and East Lane which laid the foundations for a prosperous car manufacturing industry in the town.

In 1905, Austin Motor Company began construction of a manufacturing plant at Retford and in 1906 the works were completed. The factory was to become the number one Retford site for car building, having an annual capacity of 14,000 vehicles. Austin did business from the Works until 1933, producing an array of vehicles until its doors closed and the plant was renovated and opened as a motor showroom for the local area.

Sports Cars

Retford is also renowned as the birthplace of a number of bespoke sports car marques and models. In 1900, Charles Austin Tompkins formed The Lever Motor Company, which quickly established itself as a leading manufacturer of sports cars. Lever Motor produced some of the country's most desirable sports cars, including the "Lever wheel" and the "Lever Beetle". These cars were the foremost choice of the day, setting the standard for performance, style, and quality. They found success throughout the UK, Europe, and further afield.

Finance Industry

Retford has also played an important role in the financial world. In 1914, the War Loan Company chose Retford as its geographical centre for collecting and investing funds for the war effort. Later, in 1928, the Retford Distributive Credit Society was established in the town. It allowed local people to obtain credit from a centralised fund which provided local residents with the opportunity to borrow money at a reasonable rate of interest. The success of the RDCS attracted other Credit Unions and banks to Retford, which established themselves in the town.

Motorsport

Retford is a hotbed for motorsport, and the town has been home to many Formula One drivers over the years. In 1971, Rushcliffe Borough Council opened the 700m Retford Motor Circuit on the outskirts of the town. It quickly established itself as a destination for aspiring racers, and in 1976 Mike Thackwell drove the first car around the track. The circuit has been host to a number of popular races such as the DTM German Touring Cars Series and the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). It also provided a home for historic motor racing events such as MG Cup and Formula Junior, during the 2000s.

Retford has a population of approximately 22,000. The town is predominantly working-class and statistically Retford has a higher than average number of people receiving state pension payments. Nearly 80% of the population are of white ethnicity, and the town has a lower number of foreign-born residents as compared to the rest of the country. In terms of education, 59.2 percent of the population have attained Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) or higher qualifications.

In recent years, Retford has seen an influx of younger people moving to the area to take advantage of its low cost of living, improved amenities, and newly-renovated city centre. The average age in Retford is 42.2 years, with around 81 percent of the population aged between 16 and 74.
