Penwithick is an ancient village nestled in the far west of Cornwall, United Kingdom. With fewer than 2,000 residents, Penwithick is often overlooked by tourists, but those who take the time to visit will find many interesting facts about England's least populous village. Aside from its charming beauty and breathtaking views of the bay, Penwithick holds a unique place in Britain's economy, car industry, finance and motorsports.
Situated in the southwest corner of Cornwall, Penwithick was once part of a major mining facility and home to several car and motorcycle factories, as well as an automotive research facility. At its peak in the 1960s, there were more than 1,000 workers employed in the factories, although the workforce steadily declined once the automotive industry shifted its focus to larger cities and larger factory sites. Today, the village only has a handful of workers still employed in the factories.
The automotive industry in Penwithick has a long and proud history. The village has been connected to the car industry since the early 1900s, when the first cars were manufactured in the local factories. Car production in Penwithick peaked in the 1930s, when they were producing more than 1,000 vehicles a year. The cars were popular across England, most notably the Triumph Herald, which was produced from 1959 to 1971.
In the mid-1970s, Penwithick's automotive industry began to fade, and by the late 1980s most of the factories had been closed.
