More information about Oswestry

Oswestry is a small market town in the Shropshire County of England. Located close to the Welsh border, Oswestry has a history dating back to at least the Roman period and its name - Oswestry - is derived from Latin and translates as "the hill of Osweald". Today, Oswestry is home to a population of 16,810 (as of a 2011 census) and sustains itself mainly through engineering and service industry, the latter of which includes tourism, finance and the car industry in particular.

The automotive industry has a long and varied history in Oswestry, stretching back to the early 19th century when the industry first began to take shape. In the late 1800s, Oswestry witnessed the launch of several major players in the industry, with the Grosvenor Brothers establishing an automobile sales outlet and J.M. Morris & Co. setting up an automobile manufacturing facility. This marked the beginning of an industrial and economic boom for Oswestry, which saw the town increase in size and population over the following years.

Today, a number of prominent car brands have a presence in the town, ranging from luxury and super cars to classic vintage vehicles. Aston Martin, McLaren, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and Ferrari all have outlets in Oswestry, while vintage car dealerships like WP Motors and Severn Motor Services also have locations in the town. With over 50 used auto dealerships and more than 200 workshops and garages, Oswestry has well and truly established itself as one of the country's major car centres.

It's no surprise then that Oswestry is home to some of the best motorsport attractions in the UK. Most notably, the Welsh Marches Circuit is a famous circuit racing track that hosts a range of events throughout the year. The circuit opened in 1977, and is now prepped for both amateur and professional racing. The circuit features various different types of competitions, from Class A racing to saloons and classic car rallies. The track is currently part of the FIA European Touring Car Championship.

Aside from the car industry, Oswestry also has strong links to the finance industry. The town is home to a number of banks and financial institutions - Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Carnival Bank and The Bank of Birmingham among them. In addition, a number of insurance companies have offices in the town, such as Zurich, Legal and General and Prudential. This financial hub further adds to Oswestry's economy and its place as an important centre of industry.

Moreover, Oswestry also has an interesting demographic. According to the 2011 census, more than 90% of the town's population is considered to be white British, with roughly 5% hailing from other places such as India, the Caribbean and Pakistan. The town's population is also diverse when it comes to age, with more than one-quarter of the population having retired from work and a further one-fifth being under the age of 16. Generally, Oswestry is seen as a mostly rural, older community.

All in all, Oscestry is a town with a rich and varied history which has deeply connected it to both the car industry and finance industry and motorsport. The town's population is mixed, with a number of attractions catering to all ages and tastes, and the area is certainly an integral part of Shropshire, contributing to the region's overall economy and population.
