Newton Aycliffe is one of the most important towns in the North East of England, located just 8 miles south of Darlington and 14 miles northeast of Durham. It was established as a 'New Town' in 1947 as part of a government-led initiative designed to re-house people made homeless by German bombing in World War II. Car Industry

The car industry is an integral part of the local economy in Newton Aycliffe, with the town playing host to a number of car dealerships and manufacturers. Perhaps the most famous is the Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd plant, located in the town's South West industrial area. Established in 1992, the plant manufactures both popular Toyota passenger cars, such as the Aygo, Yaris and Corolla, as well as light commercial vehicles. The plant has an annual production capacity of over 250,000 vehicles and has been cited numerous times as an exemplary example of modern production processes. The plant employs upwards of 2,000 workers and has been a major factor in the town's ongoing economic prosperity.

In addition to Toyota, the town also plays host to several specialist car manufacturers who are particularly well-known in the motorsport world. This includes names such as Zenos Cars, the brainchild of UK industrialists Ansar Ali, Mark Edwards and Chris Stewart. Zenos is a low volume, lightweight sports car manufacturer based in Newton Aycliffe's South West Industrial Estate. The firm produces two mid-engined models, the E10 and E10S.

The team fields two cars in the BTCC series and are currently fielding the Honda Civic NGTC and the Honda Civic FK2.

The town is also regularly featured in other major motorsport events such as the British Superbike Championship and the British Supermoto Championship. As such, Newton Aycliffe is a hub for motorsport-related activities and a hotspot for high-performance vehicles.

Newton Aycliffe is the largest urban area in the borough of County Durham, with the town home to a population of approximately 37,000 as of 2020.
