More information about Motherwell

Located in the central belt of Scotland, the town of Motherwell is an area steeped in history, industry and culture. A former part of Lanarkshire, Motherwell is now in North Lanarkshire and forms part of the Greater Glasgow Conurbation. With a population of just over 32,000, the town is on a cusp of transition, and many of the aspects of industry and commerce that it was once renowned for are now either dwindling or have changed beyond recognition. This article will provide an overview of Motherwell's history and its present-day links to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport.

History

The area of Motherwell has been populated since prehistoric times, but the town as it stands today did not really begin to expand until the 1800s. By this point, the area had become one of Scotland's main iron-producing and steel-producing regions, with the core industries of coal mining and other heavy industry associated with railway engineering in full swing. Motherwell also developed a strong shipbuilding industry in the early 20th century, leading to an increase in population and expansion of the town.

The economic boom of the 1960s saw an influx of new business to the area and the population of Motherwell grew significantly. The steel industry had begun to decline, but the car industry was coming to prominence in the area, as the Motherwell and Wishaw Central Garage, now known as The Fir Park Garage, was established in 1966. The garage was a significant development and set the wheels in motion for a new chapter of Motherwell's industry and commerce.

Car Industry

Today, Motherwell's car industry is booming, with many of the new and used cars bought there coming from local dealerships. The Fir Park Garage is now owned and operated by Park's Motor Group and offers a wide range of new and used cars and servicing, including a full range of dealer facilities and petrol station. Aside from the garage itself, several car dealerships are located in the area, and provide services and repairs as well as new and used cars.

Other aspects of the car industry in the town include private sector car garages, scrapyards and MOT testing centres, all of which provide important services to local residents and businesses. Tyre suppliers and other local automotive dealerships can also be found in the town, and provide a much needed source of advice, repairs and vehicle parts to the people of Motherwell and the surrounding area.

Finance Industry

The finance industry is an important part of the economy in Motherwell, with several financial providers based in the town. Natwest is one of the largest, offering a large range of financial services and products, from mortgages to investments, and helping to ensure that local people have the guidance and security when it comes to their money.

The town also has several other local and independent financial providers, including a credit union and other lenders. Unsurprisingly, many of the larger firms from the sector have headquarters and offices in the Greater Glasgow Conurbation. As such, people living in Motherwell can also access the companies and services on offer in the capital city.

Motorsport

Finally, Motherwell is also home to several motorsport venues, with a long history of motoring events being held in the town. The Knockhill Racing Circuit, established in 1974, is the best known of the area's venues, and is the oldest operating racing circuit in Scotland. Knockhill regularly holds the British Superbike Championship, the British Touring Car Championship and other events, which draw in a large crowd of spectators each year.

The town also has two smaller, less well known venues - The Strathclyde Park Rally Course and the East Kilbride Karting Centre. These provide an exciting venue for local and visiting competitors alike, as well as providing thrills for spectators.

Demographics

As previously mentioned, there is a population of around 32,000 people in Motherwell, most of whom live in urban areas. The town is also home to a large number of commuters, with around 22,700 people commuting to work each week in the area.

The population of Motherwell is incredibly diverse, with over 47% of the town's population being made up of those aged 16 or under. A further 33% are aged between 16 and 34, and a further 18% aged between 35 and 44. The town also has a significant number of people from a range of ethnic backgrounds, with around 17% of the population identifying as non-white British.

Conclusion

Motherwell has a long and varied history, and remains a hub for motor and finance industries today, as well as being a great venue for motorsport. Its location in the centre of Scotland makes it an ideal base for commuting to other parts of the country, and its diverse population ensures that it is a town full of cultural, economic and social activity. As such, Motherwell continues to be a dynamic and ever evolving part of the Scottish economy and its future is sure to be exciting.
