Introduction

Mirfield is a small town with a population of around 19,000 located in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. The town lies at the northern edge of the Pennines where the Calder and Colne rivers meet. It is well known for its historical links to the textile industry and its modern-day connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport.

History of Mirfield

Mirfield has a long and vibrant history dating back centuries. The area was probably inhabited from at least the 10th century, although the town was first mentioned in an official document from 1283. In the Middle Ages, the town was known for making woollen cloth, with more than 40 water-powered mills operating by 1637. By the 19th century, the textile industry had become an important employer for the locals and provided the region with much of its wealth.

Throughout its history, Mirfield has also been closely linked to the wider West Yorkshire area. Local woollen cloth was sold across the region, while coal and other products such as iron ore were brought in from the often coal-rich landscape around Mirfield.
