History

Mayfield village was originally known as Maueldeld and was an Anglo-Saxon settlement at the junction of two Roman roads - the major Roman A38, and the military road (now the B road Romley Wood Road). The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 and in 1327 it was known as Maufeld and in 1397, Maufeild. The Mayfield name was first mentioned in records in 1531.

During the 19th century, Mayfield developed rapidly with the arrival of silk, cotton and coal industries, as well as rail and road transport. By the beginning of the 20th century, it had become an important centre of industry, with several large companies setting up their headquarters here. The advent of modern technology, however, led to a gradual decline in many of these industries, until the late 1980s when a new wave of car industry, finance industry and motorsport investment began to shape the character of the village.

Car Industry

The car industry of Mayfield began taking shape in the 1990s, when the Toyota Corolla production facility opened in 1995. This was followed by the Mazda Motor Corporation in 2004, bringing more jobs and opportunities to the village. The Corolla production site is now home to a number of car manufacturers from across the world, including Peugeot, Citroen, Renault and SEAT. As a result, Mayfield has become a major hub of car production in the UK and Europe, especially for European-manufactured vehicles.

The village's motor manufacturing heritage is celebrated every summer with the Mayfield Motor Show. It is one of the largest in the UK and houses a number of banks, as well as online banking facilities. It is also home to the European Investment Bank, which provides funds and loans to businesses in the Mayfield region.

Motorsport

Mayfield is also the home of motorsport, with the village hosting multiple racing events every year. The Mayfield Motorsport Circuit is located at the north end of the village and has been used for Formula One, Formula Two and Formula Three races since 1998. It also holds a number of other national and international motorsport events.
