The city of Lincoln in the United Kingdom has a strong historical connection to the car, finance and motorsport industries. This is due to the city's pre-industrial history, manufacturing heritage, and its position as a modern centre of the motor industry, especially in the East Midlands region of England.
Lincoln is a city situated in the East Midlands region of England, located approximately 150 km north of London. With a population of approximately 100,000, Lincoln is the second largest city in the region and the seventh largest in the United Kingdom. Historically, the city was one of the main centres for the English wool trade and is home to a Norman castle and the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral. The city has been the subject of numerous archaeological excavations, and the remains of Roman, Medieval and Viking settlements have been discovered in the city centre.
The modern Motor Industry in Lincoln dates back to Victorian times, when Lincoln's position as a major manufacturing centre was firmly established in the 19th century. By the turn of the century, the city was home to several car manufacturers, including the Lincoln Motor Company, which had its origins as a bicycle manufacturer. However, it was the arrival of the Rootes Group of Companies in the late 1920s that initiated the modern era of car manufacturing in Lincoln. The Group purchased the dormant Lincoln Motor Company and used its facilities to produce a range of Wolseley cars and commercial vehicles. The company quickly grew, and in 1932 and 1933, the first production lines for Hillman Minx and Sunbeam Talbot cars were established at the newly named Rootes Lincoln plant. During this period, the city also developed a strong automotive engineering sector thanks to the presence of numerous specialist suppliers who serviced the now-thriving car industry.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the automotive industry in Lincoln grew substantially, thanks to the increased demand for British cars in both domestic and export markets. In 1956, Rootes opened a new car assembly plant at the city's Wigford Way. By the end of the 1960s, this facility had become the largest car assembly plant in Europe, with a workforce of over 10,000. During this period, Lincoln also became home to the headquarters of the Rootes Group, before the company moved to London in 1960.
The 1970s saw a gradual decline in the automotive industry in Lincoln, as new car production shifted overseas and the local economy was increasingly reliant on service industries. This trend continued into the 1980s and early 1990s, with Rootes' operations at Wigford Way ceasing in 1981 and all automotive production moving out of the city by 1993. The financial sector, however, has been a key contributor to the city's economy over the last few decades, with many national and international banks and financial institutions now present in Lincoln.
In addition to its past and present role in the motor industry and its financial services, Lincoln also has a long history of motorsport activities.
