Kilwinning: An Overview

Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, Scotland, is a township of around 12,500 people located in healthy commuting distance of both Glasgow and Irvine. It lies to the north of the town of Irvine and to the south of the town of Stevenston.

The name "Kilwinning" dates all the way back to the 12th century and is taken from the old Celtic words "Cill" (a church) and "Finnen" (a man of the name Finian), reflecting the presence of an old church in the area.

Originally, Kilwinning was known as a farming and coalmining area, but from the early 19th century, it became known an important centre of industry. Today, Kilwinning is associated with a variety of industries, particularly the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, as well as other smaller industries such as engineering.

Car Industry

Kilwinning has had a long history of association with the car industry, starting in the 1800s when several carriages were manufactured in the area. The Cairnhill Works of the Waverley Carriage Company was built in the early twentieth century and employed over 300 people, making coaches and wagons for the London and North Eastern Railway.

The car industry in Kilwinning was further bolstered during the Second World War, particularly in relation to the production of military vehicles. Many of the factories that had previously been producing carriages were retooled to allow for the wider production of war machines.

The car industry in Kilwinning also profited when the carmaker, Pressed Steel Fisher, established a factory in 1942. Over the next 50 years, this factory grew to become the largest industrial park in Europe, producing parts for Jaguar, Rover, Austin, Ford and Land Rover, and employing in excess of 8,000 people. The factory stayed in operation until the late 1990s and closed completely in 2001.

Finance Industry

Kilwinning's strong links to the car industry have also been paralleled by its connections to the finance industry, with both industries showing a significant amount of growth in the past century.

The presence of the General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) in the town helps to maintain a strong base of financial services in Kilwinning. GMAC is an international finance company that provides automotive finance to customers across the world. It was first established in the town in 1997 and has since grown to become one of the largest employers in Kilwinning, with over 500 people employed in the town.

Motorsport

Kilwinning also has strong connections to Motorsport. One of the main Motorsport events held in the town is the Kilwinning Rally every year. This event was first established in 1983 and has since gone on to become of the most important rally events in the UK, attracting thousands of spectators and professional drivers from all over the world.

The Kilwinning Rally has become even more popular in recent years, with the help of BBC Radio Scotland, who have broadcast live coverage of the event in recent years. This has seen the profile of the event increase significantly and has put Kilwinning firmly on the map when it comes to Motorsport.

Demographics

Kilwinning has an estimated population of around 12,500 people, with just over 11,000 of these residing in the town centre. Over 95% of these are of white British ethnicity, and the majority live in households of around 1-2 people.

Education-wise, Kilwinning has three primary schools, two secondary schools and a further education college, which offer a wide range of courses and qualifications that are tailored to the town's industry.

Conclusion

Kilwinning is an important centre of industry, with associations to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. As well as being home to some of the largest employers in the UK, the town offers excellent educational facilities and a vibrant demographic of people. This, in combination with its breathtaking views, makes Kilwinning a great place to visit and live.
