More information about Kettering

Kettering in the United Kingdom has long been connected to the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport. As the second largest town in Northamptonshire, it has a rich automotive history, and whether it be in manufacturing, finance or racing, it has provided a host of opportunities to the local community and businesses.

Kettering's first link to the car industry began in 1906 when The Singer Motor Company, who had been based in Coventry, decided to move to the town. Herbert Austin, the creator of the Austin Motor Company, had rented the old tramway works in the town and diversified into car and aircraft production, and also established The Austin Motor Company Ltd. Austin had also been responsible for producing the British Machine Gun Carrier or "Kettering Buggy" and, following the end of the war, went on to manufacture the Austin 12.

The Austin 12 was a huge success, with nearly 200,000 cars produced over a period of six years, and later went on to be the model for the Morris Minor. The world-renowned Morris Minor was manufactured in Kettering at the Nuffield works from 1948 until 1972, with over 1.3 million vehicles produced and exported to countries around the world. The Morris Minor also set a Guinness World Record for the longest-running vehicle production, with the last ten out of the 1.3 million vehicles being produced in 1999.

The car industry also expanded further in 1961, when the then-newly formed Rootes Group moved to Kettering. This saw the company responsible for managing the production of several car brands such as Hillman, Sunbeam and Singer from the town, and in 1994 the company became part of Peugeot-Citroen. This ended production of what were known as the "Kettering Cars" in the town, and instead focused the efforts of the car manufacture on producing light commercial vehicles.

The finance industry has also been a strong source of growth for Kettering, with the presence of several financial firms such as Aviva and Friends Life, as well as the The Co-operative Bank and Amicus Horizon. During the mid-1980s, the town was home to two of the largest retail banks in the UK, Barclays and NatWest, who both had major offices in the town centre that provided employment for over 2,000 people. These banks have since merged and relocated their operations to Northampton, however the formation of "Kettering Financial Services Cluster" and the presence of several other financial services firms have since helped to maintain the town's finance industry reputation.

In addition to the car industry and finance industry, Kettering has also developed into a hub motorsport with the commencement of the Silverstone Circuit in 1947, which is located just 9 miles away. Silverstone is one of the most prestigious racing venues in the world, and becoming a base of operations for multiple teams and manufacturers of cars, motorbikes and go-karts alike. Before the track opened, Kettering had been the site of several other automotive racing tracks and events that ended in 1922.

Another motorsport connection to the town is Richard Petty Driving Experience which was established on a former airfield near the town in 2011. The experience is a unique and immersive tour of the experience, offering visitors the chance to ride a stock car around the track and get a firsthand feel for race driving. Visitors can even take a professional driving lesson and take part in competitions, making it a great attraction in the town.

Kettering is home to around 79,800 people, with a median age of 39 and an unemployment rate of 2.7%. It is an ethnically diverse town, with 16.5% of population identifying themselves as minority ethnic, while the predominantly white British population is 79%. It is also an affluent area with a median weekly household income of £492. There are 29,993 households, with the most common type of dwelling being terraced houses and flats, while semi-detached homes account for 22.1% of residential buildings.

Kettering is a town with a history of strong connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, and its reputation for progress and growth continues to be carried forward by its many businesses and the local community. It is an area well-known for manufacturing, financial management and racing, and its growth in all of these areas over the years has made it one of the most important towns in the region.
