The earliest known inhabitants of Highbridge were Celtic and Iron Age settlers, whose remains have been found on the nearby local ridges. By the 12th century, Highbridge was a small settlement, and in 1227 it was granted a charter. From 1690 onwards, Highbridge developed rapidly until it reached its peak in the early Edwardsian era. This period saw the construction of several iconic bridges, including the Highbridge Iron bridge of 1810.

The Car Industry

Highbridge has long been associated with the car industry. Some of the earliest carriage makers in the region were located here, and more recently, the Highbridge area has been home to the Blue Circle tyre factory.
