More information about Hersham

The story of Hersham in the United Kingdom is one that is firmly rooted in industry, in particular the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Located in Surrey, this rural, yet bustling and growing village is a vibrant place to many families who choose to call it home. It is situated near the River Mole, history is steeped in the area and Hersham is known for its strong community spirit, quality of life and diverse range of facilities.

The village of Hersham first emerged in the late eighteenth century, when it was established as a small farming settlement, surrounded by meadowland, parks and green belt. The local landowner, the Earl of Hersham, took the village's name from the ancient Hundred of Caer Hersham, which covered the entire area around it. Even then, the village's links to industry and commerce, particularly the car and finance industries, have been deeply embedded in the fabric of its history.

The earliest connection to the car industry dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century, when the first cars were produced in areas surrounding Hersham. In the post-war years, the car industry flourished and contributed significantly to the area's booming economy. This growth was further fuelled by the establishment of The London Motor Company in 1971, the first manufacturer of the iconic Mini. The London Motor Company was based in Hersham and the Mini's popularity spread across Europe, with motor shows and rallies held in the village.

The village's connection to finance business has also been long-lived. In 1935, just four miles away from Hersham, the riverside site of Walton-on-Thames was chosen by the London Stock Exchange to house their new offices and trading floor. The Stock Exchange later moved its main offices to London, but Walton-on-Thames still retains its trading floor and large business centre.

In more recent times, Hersham has become the hub of the Afro Caribbean community, who were drawn to the area by the increasing work opportunities in the car industry and finance business located here. The village is now home to many traditional and modern institutions, many of which are involved in the Afro Caribbean culture and community.

The village also has an illustrious history in motorsport. As early as the 1950s, Hersham was home to a world-class racing circuit, known as 'The Ripple', which saw races held using Formula 1 cars. This circuit attracted some of the most brilliant drivers and records were smashed as drivers vied to become champions.

In recent times, the village has become a hotspot for amateur motorsport. Motorcycle racing, go-karting, autograss, sporting cars, rallycross, drifting and hillclimbing are all popular pastimes for residents, who have easy access to professional racing circuits and tracks in the vicinity. Even the local Hersham street racing attracts spectators from far and wide.

Hersham itself is a thriving, vibrant and family orientated village. Its population of 12,051 (2019) comprises a multicultural mix; 39.2% view themselves as White British, 13.1% as White Other and 30.7% as Asian or Asian British. Hersham's population is young and diverse, with 41.8% of the population aged 25-54.

The village has grown in popularity in recent years, due in part to its strong transport links and excellent schools. There is also a wealth of leisure facilities, including swimming pools, golf courses, parks and gyms, as well as three cinemas and a theatre. The gardens at Hersham are particularly impressive, with a wide variety of rare plants and shrubs from around the world.

Hersham is undoubtedly a unique village with a rich history, tightly bound to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. It is diverse, atmospheric and offers its residents amenities and facilities to rival any other area in Surrey.
