More information about Henley-on-Thames

Henley-on-Thames is a small town located in Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom, but despite its modest size, it is well-known around the world for its representation of the tripartite of British culture, the car industry, finance industry and motorsport.

History

The name Henley first appeared in the late eleventh century, however the original Anglo-Saxon name of the town was "Heanleaga" suggesting that the area has roots from a much earlier period of human habitation. Originally a place of refuge for tired travellers, Henley soon grew into a small riverside port along the Thames. Its original trading activities consisted of farm produce, wool, gloves and bricks and it is thought that the Roman Road, the Ridgeway, provided a link from the town to nearby settlements such as Marlow, Maidenhead and Reading. As the economy grew, so too did the town and in the 18th century Britain's first ferry service ran on the River Thames between Henley and Reading.

The Car Industry

In the 19th century Henley was already established as a supplier of agricultural equipment and farm machinery, but local entrepreneurs soon had their sights on the wider motor industry. In 1978 BMW bought the adjacent, former Rover factory and began production of the iconic and historic Mini. To date there are few reports of major new investment plans, but the area continues to be an important centre of the car industry in the UK.

The Finance Industry

Finance, and in particular wealth management, is another major industry in the area. With its attractive town centre, open spaces and riverside location, as well as its excellent transport links to London and Oxford, Henley is especially popular amongst wealthy professionals. The presence of major Registered Providers of Investments in the town, including Rothschild and Schroders, attest to Henley's popularity with financial professionals.

Motorsport

Motorsport has been an integral part of the history of Henley from the early days of the twentieth century. The Henley Triumph, produced between 1900 and 1908, is considered to have been one of the earliest British racing cars. Today the area retains a strong presence in the racing world. Close by is Silverstone, the home of British motor racing, whilst a few miles away is the exclusive and private racing circuit, the Hilltop Course, where there is a thriving racing community of rich and powerful drivers and teams who showcase the best in motor racing today.

Demography

As of the 2011 census there were 10,704 people living in the town of Henley-on-Thames. The majority of the population (83%) were white, with 9.1% Asian, 4.7% Black and 1.8% Chinese. The proportion of economically active people aged 16-74 is significantly higher than the national estimate, with 81.6% in employment compared to 72.4% for England and Wales. The median age for the population of Henley-on-Thames is 41.6, which is lower than the England and Wales median of 39.5.

Conclusion

Henley-on-Thames is a small town with a rich and vibrant history. It has a thriving car industry, with BMW having a large presence in the area. The finance sector has a major presence, with several well-known firms based there, and motorsport has a long and respected pedigree in the area. With its attractive town centre, close proximity to Oxford, London and major motor racing complexes, it is no wonder that Henley-on-Thames is a popular residence for those working in the motor industry, finance industry or motorsport. The existence of all three of these industries, as well as its diverse demographic, make Henley-on-Thames an intriguing, exciting and welcoming place to visit or reside.
