Heathfield is a suburban village located in East Sussex, England, just to the east of the ancient town of Battle. Discovered by the Romans in the 2nd century, Heathfield has witnessed many different transformations - from a Norman Burgh to Saxon herdsmen, on through to its heyday as a popular spa resort in the early 19th century. Its latest transformation, however, was the result of a group of ambitious businessmen, who came to the area in the mid-20th century to start innovative businesses. These businesses would intertwine and interlink the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport - ultimately making Heathfield a vibrant and thriving hub for like-minded people.

In terms of its demographics, Heathfield has a population of approximately 5,000 people. Of that 5,000, 43% are between 35 and 49 years old, while 15% are aged between 50 and 64. In terms of income, the median household income is £34,743 with the median household disposable income being £25,671.

Car Industry

The first big transformation to the area was under the stewardship of Joshua Harden, who moved to the village in 1954. He had ambition to start an automotive business near Heathfield, primarily because he already had contacts in the car industry and felt that an area such as Heathfield would offer the best of both worlds: a rural location but with good access to the larger towns and cities.

Joshua founded the automobile component manufacturing firm Harden Industries Ltd. in 1958. This was a massive undertaking, costing a few hundred thousand pounds at the time, which made it a huge success story for the area. Harden Industries quickly developed a reputation for producing some of the finest automotive components in the world and today employs over 1,000 people.

In addition to this, there are also a number of car dealerships and aftermarket garages that have opened up in and around Heathfield, offering specialised automotive repair services and parts.

Finance Industry

The emergence of the finance industry in Heathfield came about as a result of Joshua's success with Harden Industries. Joshua had effectively shown that the area was open to big business and this attracted the attention of several investors who were keen to set up shop in the village.

The first was the Hartsford Bank, which opened its doors in the mid-1960s, providing the locals with a safe and trustworthy financial institution. This was followed by a number of other banks, as well as two private equity firms and a venture capital firm. In addition to this, the area is also home to many international finance companies, meaning that Heathfield is now a major financial powerhouse in the East Sussex region.

Motorsport

The third and final industry to flourish in Heathfield was motorsport. In the late 1970s, a group of local racing enthusiasts decided to open their own track in the area. The track, now known as the Heathfield International Circuit, was designed to have an international-standard layout and, with the help of business investors, it quickly became popular in the local and national racing scenes. Today, the Heathfield International Circuit is home to a number of local and international racing events, and is widely recognised as one of the fastest and most challenging circuits in the United Kingdom.
