More information about Hayes

Hayes is a small town located in England in the London Borough of Hillingdon, less than 11 miles (18km) from central London. The town has had a long association with the automotive and finance industries, and also played host to several important motorsport events. The town has a population of around 19,568, and is an ethnically diverse community, containing large black, South Asian and Chinese populations.

History of Automotive Industry in Hayes

The automotive industry has had a presence in the town of Hayes since the late 19th century. Until the 1910s, Hayes was home to the London Rubber Company and the EMI Forge, both of which produced parts for the automotive industry. Later, during the interwar years, Hayes became home to the Austin Motor Company factory. During the 1950s, the factory began manufacturing the Austin A40, the first mass-produced motor vehicle with a diesel engine. The success of the factory, which employed over 2,000 people, made Hayes something of a centre for automotive production until the Austin Motor Company went into receivership in the early 1980s.

Despite the closure of Austin Motor Company, Hayes's automotive industry was replaced by a new wave of automotive companies which took advantage of London's close proximity to the town. Amongst these were Goodyear, who opened a new truck tyre factory in 1991, and a local firm, Dingley Precision Engineering, who specialise in engineering for the automotive industry.

Finance Industry

In 2014, the finance industry received a major boost when IFX Payments was established in the town. Located in the Hayes Business Centre, IFX Payments provide a range of services including money transfer, foreign exchange and payment processing. This has provided immense growth in Hayes's financial services industry, and many other similar businesses have set up in the area in subsequent years.

Motorsport

Motorsport has been an important part of Hayes's history since the late 1960s, when the Stock Car and Hot Rod Racing club set up a track close to the town centre. The 1970s saw much activity in this area, with the local race track hosting the British National Superstox Championship three times. In 1997, however, the track fell out of use when the land was sold for redevelopment.

Fortunately, motor racing was not forgotten in the town, and in 2013 the B2B Unlimited Motorsports Club was founded in Longwood Avenue, on the outskirts of Hayes. The club is devoted to the promotion and recognising of motorsport culture in the area, and hosts several car events throughout the year.

Conclusion

The town of Hayes has a long and distinguishable association with the automotive and finance industries, and a vibrant motorsport culture. This connection has been so deeply embedded in Hayes's history that, although the Austin Motor Company has since downsized and moved out of the town, the automotive industry continues to thrive. With the new financial services sector bringing much-needed economic growth to the area, and a thriving motorsport culture, Hayes is certainly an interesting town to explore.
