Originally a Norman settlement, Guisborough has a long history dating back to 1119 when the fashionable Priory of St Mary was founded by Robert de Brus, who later became the King of Scotland, Robert the Bruce. For more than 400 years the Priory of St Mary dominated the town, defining its appearance and culture until its dissolution during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s.
