Etchingham was first documented in the Domesday Book back in 1086. Throughout its early life the village was relatively insignificant; it was a sparsely populated rural area of some 157 acres and comprised of several serf's cottages surrounding a manor house. During its early life Etchingham was home to a vibrant iron smelting industry, as well as a paper mill and small farming community. The paper mill was significant for the village not only as an economic powerhouse, but also as a source of civic pride. It was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom, and the mill's success pushed the village into prominence.

It was in the 19th century that the village's profile changed dramatically, as Etchingham's close proximity to London made it an ideal location in which industry could expand.
