Yet, despite its seemingly mundane reputation, Erith is home to some of the most important manufacturing and engineering companies in the United Kingdom's car, finance and motorsport industries.
Nestled along the River Thames, Erith first grew from a tiny hamlet in Roman times. For centuries the area remained relatively quiet and developed into a bustling port town thanks to its position along the banks of the waterway. A variety of industries have since sprouted up around the area, centred around shipping, engineering and industry, and have fed into Erith's unique identity.
It has now set itself apart from the surrounding towns in its ability to provide employment to those who wish to work within the car, finance and motorsport industries.
Car Industry
As a former agricultural and industrial locale, Erith was once home to a variety of car manufacturers. One of the first and most important companies operating in the area was the British Motor Company, founded in 1907 by William Morris and Charles Black. The firm set up shop on what is now the site of the Erith Motor Trade Park and started producing the popular Austin Seven cars.
