More information about Edenbridge

Introduction

Edenbridge is a small town in the borough of Sevenoaks in Kent, England, located 25 miles south east of London. Situated on the River Eden and just north of the Wealden area, it is officially classed as a market town. It has a rich history, with its earliest recorded record being in 1236 and the town has been at the forefront of some unique developments in the UK, specifically when it comes to car manufacturing, finance and motorsport.

The town has an estimated population of 12,721, based upon the 2011 census data. There is also a relatively wide range of age groups throughout the town and 91.1% of the population being born in the UK according to the same census. The majority of the population is aged between 25 and 44, indicating an economically active demographic, with a high employment rate in general. The culture of the area is largely a combination of local rural life and London commuting culture. This blend has led to a vibrant and diverse local experience, with a variety of historic and cultural attractions and activities.

Connections to the Car Industry

The town of Edenbridge has had a long and interesting connection with the car industry. In 1895 Edward Silver invented and patented the first mechanically propelled carriage. This was known as the Silver Motor Carriage and was the first motor vehicle patented in the UK. Silver had been working in his father's bicycle shop in Edenbridge and it was there that he developed the first ever motor vehicle.

The first car to be actually manufactured in the town was an electric vehicle, and this was in 1912 by the Automobile Development Company Limited of Edenbridge. This was very much in keeping with the trend at the time, as the newly developed roads of the UK were best suited to electric vehicles.

The Great War brought a halt to car production, and it was not until 1924 that the Lichfield Motor Company in Edenbridge was established. The company was formed by a group of individuals who had been involved in the manufacturing of the electric vehicles during the war and they decided to go into production with a Petrol engined car, made from parts produced in the town and marketed as the 'Lichfield'. It is believed that the Lichfield Motor Company was the first motor manufacturer in the UK to employ all female staff.

During World War Two, the company closed due to the scarcity of materials, however the factory re-opened in 1946 and was making a range of Morris Minors with an open top two seater version. It was during this time that the company started producing its first kit cars and the quirky designs soon became a local sensation.

The town has since nurtured a few new companies in the car industry, most notably the Porcupine Car Company which produces open top sports cars and cars designed for off-road use. The company have had a surge in demand in recent years as more people are looking to buy cars with more power and off road capabilities.

Connections to the Finance Industry

The financial industry has also been a major part of the town's history. The town has hosted a number of financial companies since the 19th century and the first banking institution to be established was the Edenbridge and District Provident Union. It later merged with the National Provincial Bank and was named the Edenbridge Branch of the National Provincial Banking Company. It has remained in this format ever since and is still a major employer in the town today.

In addition to this, the town is home to a number of independent financial advisors and wealth managers as well as other businesses in the finance industry. These include firms such as Accountancy Network and Tax Resource Group, both of which have been established in Edenbridge for almost two decades.

Connections to Motorsport

The earliest Motorsport activities in Edenbridge are thought to date back to the late 19th century and early 20th century. It was during this period that bikes were raced around 'challenge' dirt tracks which had been constructed in the area. During the 1920s and 1930s these races were held regularly on both public and private roads, and some of the most notable races took place at Redstone Hill, which is located two miles from the centre of the town. It is believed that the first race that took place here was on October 13th, 1923, and featured drivers from all over the UK.

In more recent times, the small but powerful engines of karts have also been able to take advantage of the local terrain and fast, challenging courses have become a common sight on the hills surrounding the town. Most notably, Edenbridge Karting has been operating since 1997 and is home to a number of different levels of kart racing, from the popular 'Arrive & Drive' events to the FIA sanctioned national races.

Conclusion

The town of Edenbridge, as explained, has a strong connection with all three car, finance and motorsport, an interesting combination that has been a source of pride and a part of the local history and culture. The town is rather unique, a blend of local rural life, an active population and a busy commercial town, making it a great place to live and work.
