Dunbar is an ancient market town located in the district of East Lothian within the United Kingdom. Situated along the southern coast of the Firth of Forth, Dunbar was originally known as Dunbarburgh and was once Scotland's furthest-reaching port town. Dunbar has been associated with the British car industry since the early 20th century. In 1911, Dunbar Carriage Works opened its doors and began offering automobile repair and maintenance services to the local community and far beyond. Initially specializing in horse-drawn repairs, Dunbar Carriage Works eventually expanded their service offering to include components and repairs for early automobiles and eventually went on to become one of Scotland's most prominent car and van manufacturers.

In the decades that followed, many other car companies opened their doors in Dunbar.
