More information about Dumfries

Introduction

Dumfries is an ancient burgh town in the south west of Scotland, half way along the Solway coast, between Carlisle and Ayr. Dating back to at least the 12th century, the town is mainly remembered for its connections to the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns, who lived nearby at Ellisland in the late 18th century and is buried in the town centre. But Dumfries is also a centre of industry with a reputation for its connections to the car industry, finance and motorsport.

Car Industry

Dumfries has an extensive history of car manufacture. The first car factory in the town was opened on the Annan Road in May 1888 by the Dumfries Motor Manufacturing Company, a subsidiary of Brogden and Co. of London. They produced a range of motor vehicles, including motor cabriolets, motor cars and a few vans. In October 1889, the company went into liquidation, but it marked the start of the car industry in Dumfries.

The next company to enter the town was the Nith Cars Company. This was a subsidiary of the world-renowned Motor Manufacturing Company of Coventry and operated from two factories on the Annandale Road. The first cars were produced in October 1896 and by 1900 the company was well established. The cars produced were very well received, earning awards and awards of merit at many prestigious motorshows.

In 1904, the company changed its name to the Standard Car and Motor Co Ltd, a name that still resonates with the people of Dumfries today. This was a subsidiary of the Standard Motor Company of Coventry and produced a range of motor vehicles until the First World War. After the war, the company went into liquidation and the factories were sold to the Nithsdale Car and Motor Company. This company was a subsidiary of the Brush Electrical Engineering Co. of Loughborough and specialised in producing electric vehicles, mainly taxis and buses.

The last major car manufacturer in the town was the Dumfries Motors Co. This company was established in 1926 and became one of the most successful motor vehicle manufacturers in the entire country. They produced a range of cars, vans and buses, until their eventual bankruptcy in the 1970s.

Finance Industry

Dumfries has also been home to a number of important financial institutions over the years. The most famous of which is the Royal Bank of Scotland, which was founded in the town in 1764. The bank quickly established itself as a major player in the local and wider economy and continues to be a major employer in the town today.

The town also has a long history of stockbroking and credit unions. The Dumfries Stock Exchange was established in the late 19th century, and is credited as being the first stock exchange in Scotland. The town is also home to a number of important credit unions, most notably the Dumfries and Galloway Credit Union, which was established in 1972.

Motorsport

Motorsport has been popular in Dumfries going right back to the 19th century. Races were held on country roads and across the moors and local landowners organised events to take advantage of the excellent roads and motor racing. During the Second World War, these local races spawned a new Motorsport scene in Dumfries and Galloway, with a number of different motoring clubs being established.

One of the most successful and well-known of these clubs is the Dumfries Motor Club, founded in 1946. During the post war years the club was heavily involved in organising many different motorsport events and car shows in Dumfries and throughout Scotland. The most famous event organised by the club is the Stranraer Rally, which has been running for over 43 years.

The McMillan Bowl Rally is another popular event organised by the club and is held in the nearby town of Troon. This rally is one of the most prestigious and fastest rally races in the country, with over 200 entries each year.

Demographics

The population of Dumfries is estimated to be around 31,000, making it the second largest town in the region, behind nearby Stranraer. The town is predominantly white Scottish, with a minority of English and Irish people making up the rest of the population. The town has a high proportion of young people, with 42.3% of the population aged 45 or younger.

The town also has a high level of education, with 38.4% of the population being educated to degree level or higher.

Conclusion

Dumfries has a long history of its connections with the car industry, financial sector and motorsport. With a high proportion of young people and a high level of education, the town is well placed to develop its connections to the industry even further. The region is also home to a number of high-profile motor racing events, such as the Stranraer Rally and the McMillan Bowl Rally, underlining just how important the motor industry is to the area.
